Anderson is a small town located in the state of Indiana. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. It lies about 26 miles (41 km) west of Indianapolis and 17 miles (27 km) east of Fort Wayne. The town began as a small farming community in 1848, when loggers came to the area to cut lumber for homes and businesses in nearby Fort Wayne. The first school was built in 1851, but it closed in 1863 because there were no students or teachers available to teach them. In 1865, local farmers started a livestock farm that yielded over $1 million dollars during its lifetime. In 1886, Anderson residents voted to create their own city government and incorporation occurred two years later under the name of "Anderson City". The city annexed other nearby towns until 1984 when it became an independent town again.
