Anderson is a small town in the southern Indiana county of Hamilton. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Purdue University and Memorial Stadium, both located in downtown. The first settler in Anderson was James Witherspoon who built a cabin on the banks of the Whitewater River in 1827. Other early settlers included John J. Sheehan, Isaac Stephenson and Daniel Boone. Anderson's history dates back to when it was named "Clarksville" after General Andrew Jackson's forces destroyed nearby Clarksville during their march through central Indiana during the American Revolution. In 1848, Anderson became part of what would become Hamilton County when it was organized from parts of Vigo and Posey counties. Anderson has been home to Purdue University since 1870 and its stadium, Memorial Stadium, opened in 1924. The university's nickname for itself is "The Boilermakers." In football, Purdue has won six national championships (1914-2018) including four outright (1920-1924), two Maxwell Awards (1945-1948), one Insight Tykes Award (1976), and one Big Ten Championship (2011). In addition to its academic program, Anderson features a variety of outdoor activities such as fishing, golfing, running/jogging/biking/swimming etc., which contribute to its strong community spirit. He named it after General James Wilkinson's brigade that fought in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The first post office was established at Anderson in 1840, and growth continued until 1951 when it merged into nearby Carmel with its current name. In 1865, Samuel Colt began producing handguns here and continues to do so to this day. The town also became home to America's first paper mill which opened in 1892. Today many notable companies have their headquarters or major products located here such as Proctor & Gamble (P&G), Ford Motor Company (FORD), Carrier Corporation (CARrier) and Eli Lilly & Co.'s Lilly Pulitzer brand (Lilly). In 1916 Stonington Brewing Company opened its doors in Anderson and remains one of today's largest craft breweries based out of Indiana with over 60 taps serving up over 20 different beers!
