Zion was a small community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. Located on the south side of the Chicago metropolitan area, it was founded by Methodists in 1836 and annexed to the city of Chicago in 1847. Zion is now a neighborhood within the University of Chicago's South Side neighborhood. The first white settler in Zion was James De Witt Woodruff, who arrived in 1836 and named his new community after Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Jerusalem. In 1847, the city of Chicago annexed Zion to its boundaries; it remained part of the city until it was annexed into Cook County in 1896. The town site that would become Zion had been acquired by farmers near what is now Wicker Park during the 1840s. The first residents were Methodists who built their church there around 1846-49. Because agriculture wasn't very profitable at that time, many of these early settlers decided to move away from Zion when they discovered that they couldn't support themselves there with their own crops alone. A few families did stay behind though, continuing to farm and build homes until about 1870 when railroads arrived and made farming much more profitable than it ever had been before. In 1860, George Washington Carver moved from Peoria Heights eastward along I-94 to found what would become Archer City (now Arlington Heights). North of Archer City on Route 8 he began building a factory where he soon became known as one of America's most successful agricultural entrepreneurs. It wasn't long until other entrepreneurs followed suit: John Wrigley started an ice cream company near present day Lincoln Park while George Eastman founded Kodak Company just north of ArcherCity on State Street (the same location as today's Crossroads Shopping Center). One result of this industrial growth was increased competition for land and jobs among these early pioneers; some settled down while others continued moving hither and thither looking for new opportunities or new homes - all eventually joining forces together under one banner: Zionism! In 1870 Benjamin Netanyahu moved from Mount Carmel [near Starbuck] northwestward along I-294 towards what would become Beit Shemesh [Bethlehem], settling amongst other Jews thereabouts; three years later Issac Butters committed suicide rather than return home following religious riots against Zionism taking place throughout Palestine at that time which left several thousand Jews dead or wounded... Benjy Chaim Goldstein also migrated hereapproximately 1880 but soon abandoned everything he had done back east due to religious intolerance now rampant across much OF Palestine... By 1888 only 10%of original Zionist settlers still lived here although nearly 400 families had joined them since settlement began... The last Zionist family left here circa 1890... Today remnants remain scattered throughout rural Cook County including parts located within present day Elk Grove Village)...
