Zion's founders were inspired to establish a new home because of their belief that God had called them to this place. The history of Zion begins with the Mormon pioneers who arrived there in 1847. They were motivated to establish a new home because they believed that God had called them there. The Mormons first settled in what is now southern Hancock County; however, they soon realized that this location was not ideal for farming due to its difficult climate and lack of resources. So they decided to relocation their efforts closer to Chicago so that they could continue their religious beliefs and practice their faith without any extra challenges or obstacles. In 1854, Brigham Young directed his followers to move into what is now northern Kane County as part of his plan for establishing a new kingdom on earth based on Jesus Christ's teachings. This move set off an immigration wave which would swell the population of Zion by over 100% within just 10 years! In 1969, when "America's Next Top Model" aired its third season in Illinois (the show being filmed at the University State Fairgrounds), Zionism was one of the towns featured prominently throughout central Illinois along with Bloomington (which also made it into the show), Normal (in northwestern Indiana), Peoria (in northeastern IL), Rockford (in far southwestern IL), Decatur (in southeastern IL), Batavia (near present-day Albany NY) and Grayslake (near Bloomington).
