The 1st Regiment of United States Volunteers was organized at Zion, Illinois on December 14, 1861. The regiment was redesignated the 1st Cavalry Regiment on July 20, 1865. On March 15, 1868 the regiment was mustered out of service and re-designated as the 4th Infantry Regiment of United States Volunteers. The regiment served in the Union army during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865. In 1868 it again mustered out of service and re- redesignated as the 3rd Infantry Regiment of United States Volunteers. It currently exists as a unit within the Illinois Army National Guard. Zion is located in central Illinois and dates back to 1824 when it became part of what would become known as Peoria County. At that time there were three settlements in Zion: Zion Station (now an agricultural village), Springdale, and Westville. When Missouri seceded from the Union on April 12, 1862, Missouri Governor Claiborne Clifton ordered all federal troops withdrawn from Peoria County including those stationed at Zion. 2nd Battalion Farragut's Regulars 3rd Battalion Reuben Stoneman's volunteers 4th Volunteer Infantry Regiment (1st Cavalry) In November 1861 Confederate General Braxton Bragg decided to attack Nauvoo under cover of darkness using guerrilla forces composed mostly of 2nd Battalion Farragut's regulars and 3rd Battalion Reuben Stoneman's volunteers under Lieutenant Colonel George Harker (the future general). Bragg believed that if he could take Nauvoo without being detected then he could build a siege infrastructure which could be used against Cairo, Tennessee should that city fall into Confederate hands. However due to poor intel gathering by Major General David Heintzelmann his units encountered minimal resistance until reinforcements arrived latecomers such as Company C south side road bridge over swollen Sangamon River; here Captain John Brown’s riflemen repulsed a combined attack by Confederate infantry colonel James Longstreet with losses numbering 23 killed/ kidnapped/exhausted while Captains Daniel Boone and Elijah Mountain led a successful counterattack resulting in 6 captured men plus Longstreet himselfcaptured alive despite sustaining serious wounds which required weeks recuperation before he finally surrendered at Carthage Court House four days latermajestic event for both sides who had vastly outnumbered each other five times their number troops only one day after conflict beganWhat followed were years of bitter litigation between General Heintzelmann’s soldiers & Mayor Amos Pournelle over compensation for property damage done by Confederate irregulars along Side Road Bridge where cannonballs blasted through floorsboards homes windows Saving many lives resultedGeneral Heintzelmann eventually received $20 per head assessed valueFor more than 50 years military personnel barracks has been stood vacant & derelict while civilians live next door most recently owner closed shop & left property abandoned polluting water source with black mold

The Zion National Park army gift history began in 1916 when the park was created as a result of the National Defense Act. The park was originally known as Mount Vernon National Battlefield and became part of the United States Army in 1917. In 1920, the army donated 5,000 rifles to the park. In 1938, an airfield was built within the park and it became operational in 1941. The military also donated 12 bombers to provide aerial support for troops stationed at Zion. In 1945, after World War II ended, Zionism had gained a large following in America and many donations were made to Zionist causes including $2 million given to Jerusalem’s Hebrew University for research into Jewish history and culture. In 1949, two more airfields were built within Zion which served as both military bases and home fields for various sports teams. Finally, in 1953 an amphitheater was built within the park which served as a venue for concerts by famous musicians such as Harry Belafonte and Ray Charles.

According to the 2010 census, Zion has a population of 8,812. Zion is a small city with a typical citizens size of around 2,000 people. It is made up of three wards: North Ward (north side), South Ward (south side), and East Ward (east side). Zion experienced significant growth during the early years of its existence. In 1832, it had an estimated population of 20 residents; by 1838 this had increased to 50 residents. The following year saw another increase in population to 80 residents due to the influx of new immigrants from Ireland and other parts of Europe. As Zion grew larger, so did its need for housing – starting in 1847 there were already five buildings that could be used as homes for people living in Zion City proper. During the late 1800s and into the 1900s Zionism began to decline as part of American society overall; however, it continued to grow within Zionist circles themselves until World War II when it completely disappeared as a organized movement due largely to political factors at play within America after that event’s start. Today there are sporadic activations throughout Zionist circles within America but little actual activity taking place on either an institutional or organizational level outside those forums
Zion, Illinois was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1818. The town was named after the biblical town of Zion in Israel. The church built a sawmill and a school in the town, which became an important center for farming and milling activities. In 1831, Zion joined the Illinois Union as a territory. In 1847, it became a state of Illinois.
