The first coffee shop in Yorkville was established in 1911 by two German immigrants, Johann and Emilie Kapp. The business served light-but-tart coffee from a small roaster on the north side of the city. In 1935, the business moved to its current location on Washington Street and became known as "The Coffee House". The Coffee House closed in 1951 but reopened as a 3-rd generation familyowned and operated business in 1978. The Kapp's passed away in 1990, but their daughter Laura continued the family tradition of running the store until her death in 2006. Today, "The Coffee House" is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with Schultz' coffee beans roasted fresh each day.
Yorkville is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,436 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Bethlehem–St. Joseph metropolitan area. The village was founded in 1881 by three brothers, named George, Hiram and David York. The first post office was opened in 1882 and the first store on what is now Main Street opened in 1883. The village took its name from York County, Pennsylvania where it was located at that time. As Yorkville grew larger it annexed portions of neighboring townships including New Lebanon (now South Holland), Roscoe Township (now Hinsdale), and West Side Village (now Addison). In 1910 when main street became Wilson Avenue North and Addison Road became State Street North, Yorkville had become one of the largest villages in Kane County with a population of over 1,500 people living cheek by jowl on two main streets with no public square or churches. During the 1960s and 1970s many businesses closed due to business consolidation throughout Illinois; however, many local residents refused to leave their homes for what they saw as an unfair competition from large suburban businesses which they felt were not contributing to their community culturally or spiritually but instead were just exploiting them economically. In response to this boycott organized by various civic organizations such as the League of Women VotersYorkville won an injunction against these large businesses which lasted until 1978 when another ordinance made exceptions for small businesses that met specific criteria like being owned and operated by women or having a 50% female ownership percentage within five years after opening. This ordinance also exempted agricultural businesses which had been running without interruption since before World War II along with any non-television retail establishments over $25 per week sales excluding food services such as supermarkets since those activities constituted only 5% of total retail sales nationwide during that same period although grocery stores constituted 50% of all retail sales statewide). Throughout these years there have been periodic protests outside major business locations against fears that newUrbanization would eventually lead to displacement of traditional rural communities who continue to operate under unique cultural values and traditions even though their livelihoods are threatened by newer industrial developments situated several miles away from their homes . Yorkville was founded in 1847 by the merger of two small communities, York and Westville. The town was named after York County, Pennsylvania, where many of its early settlers had come from. It quickly became a popular place to live and work because of its perfect location between Chicago and Illinois's larger cities. Thanks to its close proximity to both major markets and ample employment opportunities, Yorkville grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s. By 1871, it had reached its peak population size with over 2,000 residents. However, the 1870s were also difficult times for the town as economic conditions began to improve in both Chicago and Illinois. This led to a gradual decline in Yorkville's population until it reached its low point in the 1940s. However, Despite his efforts, Mayor George Haggerty never managed to maintain or revive Yorkville's economy during his time in office. Consequently, it has only recently regained some of its former importance as a tourist destination due to recent developments such as new restaurants and attractions that have arrived on campus since he left office. In addition, there is now a successful business incubation program called "The Factory" that helps young entrepreneurs start their own businesses in downtown Yorkville. As a result of all these initiatives – including more than $10 million dollars worth of private investment since 2006 – Yorkville is on track to continuing growing at an alarming rate over the next several years!
Yorkville is located in the Leesburg, Illinois area. It was first settled in 1847 by John and Mary Metzger. The Metzers were the parents of the current Yorkville Township. Yorkville was originally called "The Town of Shields" because there were only three homes in the town. The name was changed to Yorkville after General George Washington's visit to that area in 1784. In 1892, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum was built in Yorkville by President Abraham Lincoln's grandson, Tad Lincoln. The library is open to the public and has a collection of presidential materials as well as historical artifacts from throughout Illinois. On October 3, 1886, Mrs. Fannie Norris killed six children and their mother with a shotgun at her home on Elm Street in Yorkville after an argument about money owed her daughter-in-law for a shopping trip she had taken to Chicago earlier that day. Norris was later found guilty of four counts of first degree murder and sentenced to death; however, she received a life sentence instead due to publicity given surrounding the case at the time. Norris died at age 87 years old on April 14, 1984 after spending more than 60 years on death row without ever being executed
