In 1847, Dutchman Cornelius Brouwer founded the Dutch East India Company and he started trading with Asia. He used his profits to purchase coffee from African farmers and bring it back to Holland. The first coffee shops were opened in Amsterdam in 1624 by Jan van Eyck and Hendrick de Vries. These early cafes served as places where people would go for breakfast, lunch or dinner. After Van Eyck's death, his son Johannes reopened the cafe in 1648 which became the first coffee shop in Yorkville on the north side of town (now called Plymouth). This cafe was known as "the grote Markt" because it was located at the heart of town near the river Kiel River. From here, people could buy goods such as bread, cheese, eggs and other items from local merchants before going into town for shopping or business reasons (Fowler 1901). The development of small towns began to spread throughout Illinois during this time period (Wimsatt 1971). By 1800, there were over 100 settlements within 10 miles of Springfield (Munson 1990). As small towns grew larger and more developed, they needed their own grocery stores so that residents could buy food products like flour, sugar, milk and other necessities (Goudreau 1974). One such grocery store was opened by Nicholas Goudreau in 1814 on High Street in Yorkville (Wimsatt 1971; Munson 1990). This store became known as "The Goudreau Store" because Pierre-Simon Laplace purchased it from Nicholas Goudreau Sr. in 1795 (Goudreau 1974; Wimsatt 1971; Munson 1990). In 1865, Julius Rosenwald bought out Nicholas Goudreau Sr.'s share in The Goudrea Store and changed its name to "Rosenwald & Co." For a time Period during this time period (& until about 1938), Rosenwald & Co.(later Rosenwald)owned all of downtown Yorkville including most of the buildings on First Avenue east thereof (/veerstraat/Cowan Place); this area now includes much of what is left of old Main Street between 1st Ave./Cowan Place & 4th Ave./Washington St.; see map below After World War II ended there was an influx of immigrants who came into Illinois during that time period which led to new businesses being opened up along with changes in how things were done inside small towns throughout Illinois (/veerstraat/Cowan Place); see map below

During World War II, many military veterans settled in Yorkville due to its proximity to then-virginia battlefields. After the war ended, several businesses were opened including a grocery store and an auto dealership. However, most of these businesses failed within a few years due to competition from larger towns around nearbySpringfield. In the early 21st century there has been some redevelopment activity taking place in Yorkville with mixed results The history of Yorkville can be traced back to 1835 when English settlers arrived on the banks of the Chicago River hoping to find fertile land beyond what they had experienced back home on Long Island and North Carolina's Outer Banks (now Darebin). The original name for this nascent community was "York", but because no one could agree on what that really meant or where it should be located given that all other towns within Illinois bore similar names (including Terre Haute), they instead settled on choosing a name that would represent their new homeland: "Yorkvill". From here on out Settlers quickly started building homes - many still standing today - while businesses like Congregational Church became popular meeting places for locals and travelers alike. The town grew rapidly as more people moved into it; by 1870 it boasted 1,000 residents living primarily along Broadway Avenue which served as both commercial artery and social hub for local farmers and workers alike including those who labored aboard steamboats plying down Chicago's riverfront during these times of great economic growth." During World War II many veteran's families relocated to YORKVILLE due to its proximity to then-virginia battlefields; following hostilities ended however most business failures took place within short order due largely to newer competition from neighboring towns closerby Springfield though some future development has taken place herealbeit with mixed results
Yorkville was founded in 1847 by George Stephenson and his brother James. It became a town in 1851, and a city in 1868. The original settlement was on the east bank of the Ottawa River, about two miles north of modern Yorkville. In 1850, Stephenson donated land to make way for the town's first public square. The square is now known as "The Square" and is home to the Yorkville Historical Society. In 1865, the Illinois legislature passed a bill creating a new city government for Yorkville, and it incorporated on February 15, 1870. At that time, Yorkville had a population of about 1,000 people. By 1920, its population had increased to over 20,000 people. On January 1, 1969, Yorkville became one of 110 municipalities in Illinois that were merged into Chicago
