Worth and his son-in-law Ira Sayers on Railroad Avenue in 1892. The store continued to be open until it closed in 1933; however, it remains one of the most intact businesses in the community today. As early as 1898, people were mentioning a place called "Worth" on maps of Decatur County because James Prenticeworth had settled there about two years earlier with his family and began selling goods from a wagon coach dealership he built near where he now lives on Old Decatur Road. Mr. Prenticeworth's younger brother owned several stores inDecatur County at that time so word spread quickly about this new settlement - soon other farmers were beginning to establish themselves there too! In 1916 when the post office moved from its original location to what is now the courthouse square (then known as Pleasant Street), they decided to rename their new building "Worth". At first glance it may have seemed like an odd name for such an old community but upon closer inspection one can see why - it truly does typify worth throughout its history! Not only has Worth been home to some of our most illustrious residents over the years (e including Presidents Ulysses S Grant and Franklin D Roosevelt) but also many weddings/ funerals have taken place here including those of Abraham Lincoln and John F Kennedy!
