The first organization organized by the United States government during the American Civil War was the 1st Regiment of Artillery, which was raised in 1865. The regiment served until 1868 and then was disbanded. The 2nd Regiment of Artillery was created in 1870 and served until 1875. In 1876, the 3rd Regiment of Artillery was formed and served until 1888. Then, in 1889, the 4th Regiment of Artillery was founded and served until 1897. Finally, in 1898, the 5th Regiment of Artillery was formed and served until 1901. In 1903-1905, separate units were organized for artillery training at Camp Butler in Moline, Illinois. These units became known as batteries (4th Battery from 1903-1904; 5th Battery from 1905-1907). From 1907-1909 there were also moments of glory when different batteries performed tasks such as assaulting Confederate positions at Chickamauga Ridge or participating in maneuvers at Fort Donelson on July 8,. 1914.. Butterfly Squadron No 1 (later redesignated as Combat Aviation Squadron) activated on October 15,- 1943 at Wright Field with P-38 Lightning fighter aircraftlocated near Dayton Air National Guard Base Ohio while engagedin sporadic aerial combat over Europe against Nazi Germany(and later Allied forces). Worth is a small town in Illinois. The population was 1,059 at the 2010 census. It is located in McLean County. The state capital, Springfield, is located just outside of Worth. The community was founded in 1892 by John Prentice and his wife Emma as a small farming town on the east bank of the Ohio River. In 1925, it became a station on the Illinois Central Railroad which served as its primary commercial center until 1971 when Amtrak took over that function. In 1967, Worth consolidated with nearby Moline to form what would become one of the most rural communities in Illinois. Since then, Worth has seen an steady growth in its population and economy despite experiencing some significant economic setbacks including two natural disasters (the 1966 Flood and Hurricane Tracy) which destroyed many homes and businesses. Today, Worth remains a vibrant community with strong cultural ties to its neighboring towns as well as support from its own volunteer fire department and general store which are still among Illinois' largest employers today.
