The museum was founded in 1984 as the Air University of Illinois Wing and became an independent nonprofit organization in 1990. It is the only air force wing facility in Illinois with its own history museum.
Worth is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. Worth is located on the Kankakee River and has a total area of 25 square miles (76 km2). The City of Worth was founded on October 1, 1853 by George W. Worth and his brother-in-law Moses Dixon. George W. Worth had been born in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1824 to General John Worth and his wife Esther background as Native American traders with the Osage tribe. In 1851 he moved from Knoxville to what is now Kane County, Illinois where he formed a partnership with fellow general Amos Cummings to purchase land for $1 million dollars which they called "The Prairie." The area that became Worth was named after George W. Worth's father who settled there in 1792. In 1865, George Washington Carver purchased 8800 acres (29 km2) of land east of present day Worth from George W., making it one of the largest private donations ever made to an American city or town. The first post office atworth was established in 1854; it ceased operations in 1957 due to changes in postal service regulations instituted during the Eisenhower Administration's " nationwide reordering" of post offices across the United States which favored larger towns over smaller ones. Around this time also arose development around what would become downtown worth including streetscape and parkland additions as well as two new blocks north/northwest of Main Street between Greenfield Avenue and Emerson Road known today as Sperry Place and First National Bank Park Blocks #4-6 along Emerson Road were added later becoming known popularly as "the District". Downtown business district rapidly grew during this time reaching its peak popularity around 1910 when over 100 businesses were located inside downtown limits alone along Third Street between Main and Quincy Streets.; however starting about 1920s growth gradually declined until peaked again circa 1930s before declining again by 1940s although some evidence suggests that downtown may have continued to grow through into the 1950s if not for fire damage caused by a smallpox epidemic which destroyed most businesses near Central Park after World War II

In 1959, President Eisenhower established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and directed that all donations made to NASA be shared equally between both agencies. This led to another tradition within the Air Force, which is known as The Astronauts Memorial Trophy Awards Program. This program allows members of theAir Force to nominate individuals who have made significant contributions to space exploration and science education for awardees recognition. In 1968, Congress passed legislation authorizingthe establishment ofthe Smithsonian Institution as a national museum dedicatedto permanent exhibits onaircraft and space technology.
