Woodstock was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States, located on the banks of the DuPage River. The population was 1,500 at the time of its incorporation in 1851. It is now an unincorporated community located in Aurora Township. The town was named after Woodstock, England, where George Washington and his family were born. The first post office was established in 1848, and served for five years. A store and hotel were built in 1850; and a school was opened in 1852. In 1857, the first railroad reached the town; and by 1865 it had two stores, six sawmills, nine churches (including one Methodist), ten schools (including one high school), four hotels/resorts (one with 75 rooms), three cotton mills (four with 12 looms each), four freight yards (two with locomotives) and twenty-six farms. In 1861–1865 there were several battles between Union troops and Confederate troops near Woodstock; these fights are sometimes mentioned along with other skirmishes during that period as part of the history of Woodstock. One such battle did take place on October 5th 1863 when Confederate General Robert Ewing attacked Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant at Rock Island Heights while they were resting after their victory over Grant's main army at Pea Ridge seven days earlier On November 3rd 1863 Union troops under General John McClernand destroyed a bridge over the Du Page River linking Woodstock to Aurora Township The original post office building still stands today as a private home called "Homespun History" next to Interstate 95 north of Aurora Township
