Woodstock, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It lies along Illinois Route 2 south of the city of Chicago. Woodstock is one of several towns in McLean County that are part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was founded by John and Anna Woodstock in 1847 as a farmstead on a rise overlooking the village of Elmwood Springs just east of present-day Chicago. In 1892, Anna Woodstock donated land to build a park and school in honor of her daughter Fanny who had died young. The Anna Woodstocks Park was dedicated on July 12th, 1893. In 1907, Edwin Forrest purchased part of what is now Elmwood Springs from Anna Woodstock for $1 million and renamed it Forrest Field after his movie production company which later became known as Republic Pictures. In 1923, Republic Pictures merged with Paramount Pictures to become Universal Studios but this merger did not last and Universal passed away in 1998. In 2006, Forest City Enterprises announced that they were purchasing all assets (except for the Park) from Republic Pictures including film rights to much treasured property including portions of Elmwood Springs and Forrest Field including what is now downtown Woodstock On October 15th 2006 local residents gathered at Forrest City Enterprises headquarters located at 5233 W Evergreen Rd to celebrate their acquisition when it was announced that the Park would be preserved as an openair museum with displays about Hollywood history

The town was founded in 1847 and named for John C. Woodstock, an early settler. It became a municipality on January 1, 1903. In 1911, it had a population of 499 and seceded from Clark County to become part of the City of Chicago. Woodstock is located at (38.760919,-87.527597). According to the 2010 census, its residents are mostly African American and Latino with some white people as well.
During the late 1800s, Woodstock was a thriving small town in the Illinois region. It enjoyed strong cultural ties to its nearby counterparts, such as Springfield and Peoria, and helped maintain a vibrant economy during the turn of the century. However, by 1910, Woodstock had fallen victim to economic recession and social unrest. Its residents turned on one another in what is known as the " Riot of 1910." This violent outburst left at least 20 people dead and several hundred injured. The event has been deemed one of America's most volatileListener events.
