Woodridge is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Woodridge was founded in 1855 by John Cramer and his family as the village of West Side. In 1872, it became a municipality and in 1896, a city. In 1998, it merged with neighboring Deerfield to form Woodridge-Deerfield. The population of Woodridge grew from 2,772 at the 2000 census to 3,059 at the 2010 census due to new development and annexation of adjacent villages and townships. The first settler in what is now Woodridge was John Cramer who arrived on horseback from New York State in 1855. He platted what would become West Side which he named after his home state of New York City where he had lived for some time before coming to Illinois. One early resident reported that "a few trees were then all that was left standing on our original piece of land". Soon after Cramer's arrival settlers began arriving on horseback or wagon train through central Illinois looking for land to settle: "the first men I know of landed here about October 1st [1856], just beyond this point", wrote one settler later that year in an affidavit filed with the U.S. Patent Office records Cramer's plat included two square miles (5 km2) including what would later become downtown Woodridge He erected a small log cabin near present day Superior Avenue and Wabash Street as his home until November 15th when he adopted children John & Catharine (Nelson) Cramer along with their families into his own family John Ducharme moved into West Side from Joliet Township on December 8th 1860 followed soon by Jno Morse & Abram Yates; Levi Richardson came next on January 10th 1861 . . . . afterwards Fenton Dixon & David Evans came November 15th 1862 bringing over 100 head of cattle..” In addition to pioneer settlers there were more immigrants following railroads reaching central Illinois: "between 1850-1920 over 55% of residents born outside Europe settled in Cook County"wrote researcher Rebecca Nelson By 1880 most residents spoke English as their primary language although Spanish also circulated among some groups One early observer noted "this portion now called “West Side” proper never contained any dwellings save those rude shanty huts built by prospectors while they explored this rich country". Woodridge was a small village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,835 at the 2000 census. It is located on the south side of Chicago. The village was founded in 1851 by white settlers from Kentucky and Ohio who came to what is now Woodridge as part of the Great Lakes region during the early 1850s whenChicago was being developed as a center for commerce and culture. They named their new settlement after General James H. Wilson's home town of Woodridge in Mercer County, Kentucky. In 1871, Woodridge became one of twenty-six villages created within the limits of Chicago by act of the State Legislature; it had been a part of Cook County since its organization as a county in 1847. In 1906, however, it reverted back to its original status as a sectional township with a population of 675 people (less than one-tenth that of Chicago). The Village formed an all-white Citizens' Committee to promote social welfare measures and racial integration through intermarriage among its residents; this committee succeeded in achieving passage by referendum of an ordinance barring discrimination against whites only on accountof race or national origin. In 1933, voting lists for local elections showed that all but two residents were white; however, because African Americans constituted 10% or less of thevillage's total population until after World War II (when they began to increase rapidly), integration into municipal affairs proceeded slowly and unevenly throughout those years. In 1954, Mayor Richard J. Daley appointed John Fenton as Village Administrator to lead developmentally appropriate management programs for Woodridge - goals which included increased housing production and increased access to education opportunities for all citizens regardless gender or color - objectives which would ultimately be accomplished through annexation by neighboring DeKalb Township in 1966 resulting in over 2 million square feet (190 hectares)ized commercial space within City Limits since then!
