Woodridge is a small town in the Kane County, Illinois area. The population was 377 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Woodridge was John Cook in 1803. Cook and his family were Vanishing Pool pioneers who journeyed down the Fox River from Canada to find land for themselves and their families. They were followed by others over the next few years as land became available along the river's banks. In 1806, John Cook's brother James moved to what would become Woodridge and began to farm a piece of land that he called "Algonquin." In 1812, another pioneer, William Brown, arrived from Kentucky with his family and started growing corn on some of the same acres that James had earlier purchased. Brown's farmstead grew into a large one that continues to be used today as a home and business center for residents of Woodridge. By 1821, there were 11 families living in Woodridge when it was organized as Village of Algonquin/Greene Townshipality (later renamed Ridgefield Township). On December 15, 1825, Ridgefield Township was divided into two parts: Algonquin/Greene Townshipality portion went to form Aurora Township while Ridgefield Township itself became part of new Aurora County (now Kane County) under territorial government formation following Illinois' admission into statehood on April 1, 1818. When Chicago became an incorporated city on May 5, 1896 (following Chicago's incorporation via Image Act), much of what is now Woodridge lying within its limits were included within its boundaries as well; however, most of these developments occurred after 1906 when most villages ceased being formed or changed hands due to annexation by larger cities like Chicago or because they failed to meet municipal governance requirements set forth by City Hall such as having apolice department and fire service etc.). Aurora township continued functioning until 1972 when it merged with Kane county; woodridges remains an unincorporated community within Kane county today
