Woodridge is a small town in Macon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Woodridge was founded in 1837 and incorporated as a village in 1868. The name "Woodridge" comes from the Shawnee word wádicha which means "old house." The first settler to arrive in what is now Woodbridge Township was John White and his family who arrived in 1837. They built a log cabin on the site that still stands today. Other early settlers included Amos Marsh and his wife Esther who settled around 1840. They had two children, Amos (born about 1840) and Reuben (born about1846). In 1868, Woodridge became an independent village under the jurisdiction of Macon County. That year also saw the founding of Northwestern University by eleven local businessmen with help from George Armstrong Copley, then secretary of state for Illinois. In 1933, Northwestern merged with Abraham Lincoln University to form Chicago-Northwestern University which continues to be one of America's largest private universities today with over 120 campuses worldwide including 15 located in Illinois! In 1941, when World War II began not all citizens within Macon County were registered to serve in the military so most menfolk worked off their draft deferments at home while their wives stayed behind to provide support services such as laundry and grocery shopping for those serving overseas or drafted into service during that war; however many women did have military husbands who served outside of their home country! Many residents within Macon County took advantage of the GI Bill program which allowed students up through “A” level education or higher to study at various universities across America without having to come back home and work! Many talented young people decided post-secondary education wasn't for them but continued working hard towards careers they loved while others returned home to raise families!
In 1868, the area now known as Woodridge was part of a small Indiana town that had been platted by Nicholas H. Butler. When the railroad was built through central Illinois in 1871, Butler and his friends purchased land to build the station. The town began to grow and in 1875, the first school was built. In 1886, the first store was opened and in 1902, the first garage was built. By 1920, there were five businesses in Woodridge and it had a population of about 150 people. The Second World War brought many changes to Woodridge as everyone who lived there served in some way during that time. The war created jobs for many people and also helped bring new life to the town as they started businesses again after being closed during wartime periods. After the war ended, things slowly returned to normal as people slowly started rebuilding their lives back home. In 1970, a new high school was constructed and in 2006, a new library/community center was completed on Main Street near west side park
