Army gifts have been a part of the history of Woodridge, Illinois for many years. The first gift given to the town was a rifle by General George Washington in 1779. The town's military history began with the unification of the states in 1815 and the addition of Woodridge to Cook County. In that year, General David Dixon donated a flagpole to be used as a meetinghouse and paradeground in downtown. Also in 1815, Colonel John Brown donated $5,000 for an armory and barracks on State Street. This gave us our current arsenal on Northampton Avenue. During World War I (1914-18), local residents contributed 2 tons of food and clothing to help feed troops overseas. After the war, civilians also contributed money for new schools and other projects in town. Gradually over time, Army gifts became more common, especially after World War II when businesses started opening up throughout the community as soldiers returned home from service. The town was organized on November 3, 1847 by Absent-minded millionaire and Mormon missionary George WOODRidge and his cousin James MCDANIELS as a tithing settlement in response to religious persecution by the Mormons. On April 6, 1862, Woodridge was named for General Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War. Woodridge soon became a major production center for artillery parts made in nearby Carbondale and Decatur. The economy declined after World War II due to competition from larger towns such as Springfield and Peoria. Woodridge is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Woodridge is one of the oldest communities in Cook County and has been around since 1855. The town was first called "Scottdale" after Captain James Scott who helped found the village in 1855. In 1914, it changed its name to "Woodridge." The first store in what is now Woodridge opened on Highland Avenue in 1855. The village had two stores and a post office until 1912 when it moved to 27th Street and Cicero Avenue. A Odd Fellows Lodge No. 592 met in 1915 at which time they bought a house on South Washington Street for $25 per year rent from Anna Houghton (1852-1911). They also built a barn and got contributions from many people to help with their building project including $5 from each resident every month for six years until it was finished by 1918. In 1916, Mrs Houghton donated land on the east side of Cicero Avenue south of 57th Street for a high school which would later become Parkland High School; this land is now known as North Park Drive. In 1925, Woodridge merged with neighboring Grayslake to form an all-town community known as Grayslake-Woodridge which still exists today as an incorporated municipality within Cook County One reason why Woodridge retains its community spirit today despite having experienced some growth in recent decades may be due to its rich history dating back to when it first began developing into what we know today as “the pretty little town” that sits atop rolling hills just outside of Evanston Township’s borders on Indiana Road/Highway 24 north of Lake Michigan Boulevard Some other reasons include: 1) large donations by individuals or organizations over time (eighty percent are still being given), 2) supportive legislation authored by Representative John Conyers Jr.,(D–Chicago),3) strong social networking capabilities through online resources such as Facebook and Twitter 4) close relationships formed with various municipalities located within Cook County; these have included Evanston Township, Oak Lawn Village, Arlington Heights Village and Mundelein (all constituent towns within Chicago’s city limits). Many residents feel that their local history helps contribute greatly to their overall sense ofcommunity identity while others attribute this feeling directly to their elected officials who often take great interest in preserving local heritage . The town of Woodridge was founded in 1838 by John and Mary C. Woods. The town was named after John's father, William Woods, who had settled near the present-day city of Chicago in 1827. The first post office in Woodridge was established in 1840. In 1853, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill authorizing the erection of a public school in the village of Woodridge. The first school building, which functioned as an academy until 1865, was built on what is now State Road 158. In 1877, the village of Woodridge merged with nearby Kankakee to form the new City of Woodridge.
