The National Guard of the United States of America has a rich history in Wood River, Illinois. The first national guard unit was organized on July 14, 1861, and served as part of the Union army during the American Civil War. The first national guard regiment in Wood River was called the 3rd Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry. It was created on October 1, 1861 and served for three years. On November 15, 1866, the 3rd Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry was redesignated as the 2nd Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry. The 2nd Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry served for four years from 1868 to 1870. From 1870 to 1872, it was redesignated as the 1st Regiment Illinois Volunteers Infantry. In 1874, it became known as the National Guard of Wood River County and served until 1898 when it was disbanded due to World War I. One of the most famous members of the National Guard in Wood River is George Armstrong Custer who fought in both World Wars II and Korea. Other notable members include Jesse James who were shot at Earps' ambush in Dodge City and died; Allen Jarrell who was fatally shot by bandits while serving with Company K 9th Cavalry during Indian Wars; Winfield Scott Hancock who led troops into battle against Mexico at Juarez Hill; Harold Easley III who commanded an infantry battalion during Desert Storm; and more recent members such as Lance Corporal John Doe who fought with ISIS militants in Iraq
The National Guard is a nationally-recognized and volunteer force that provides law enforcement and support services in the United States. The Guardsmen provide security for federal facilities, courtrooms, airports, and other public areas. In addition to their duties as law enforcement officers, the Guardsmen are also trained in emergency response and have access to a wide range of weapons and equipment. The National Guard was first organized in 1792 as a militia corps of white farmers from New England. By 1860, the Guards had become an all-volunteer force under the command of state governors. The Militia Act of 1792 authorized the raising of 100 companies for three years with no pay except for transportation expenses. The act also authorized armories and stores at various points throughout the country to be used for storage purposes for national guard arms and ammunition. In 1838, Congress passed an act authorizing 1 million militiamen subject to military discipline by state legislatures. This act created what is now called the National Guard Bureau within the Department of War. The bureau became operational on September 16, 1841 when President James Kahl signed into law an act creating five regiments (the 1st New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment; 2nd Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry Regiment; 3rd Connecticut volunteers; 4th Indiana Volunteers) under Brigadier General John Pope’s command at Fort Dearborn in downtown Chicago. Since its establishment as a voluntary force in 1800, there has been significant growth within both enrollment and capability within the National Guard Bureau - from 10 thousand men on July 1st 1906 to over 350 thousand today! Wood River is a census-designated place (CDP) in Stephenson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The first settlements in what is now Stephenson County were made by farmers who arrived from northeast Indiana and Pennsylvania during the 1810s. By 1816, there were six families living in a log cabin on the banks of the Kenney Fork of the Chicago River. The first school was taught by Sister Catherine de Sales at an early stage. In 1827, three brothers organized a group of settlers to purchase land in what is now Stephenson County from Native Americans for $100 each. They named their new settlement "Wood River". The town's development accelerated after it became apparent that railroad construction would soon reach its destination; accordingly, many businesses and homes were built along both sides of the tracks as engineers studied potential sites for shops and trains. When Wood River opened to commerce on December 12, 1846, it had a population of just under 50 people. By 1870, it had grown to more than 2,000 residents due to continued growth along with easy access to transportation via railroads and waterways. During World War II many local farmers Union Carbide plants were built in Wood River which employed many men and women who contributed directly or indirectly to wartime production goals including starting fires on site night shifts while others helped process materials needed for planes and tanks being produced all over America
