It has been said that Wood River is the "charming town of the sea." The town was founded in 1836 by Capt. Noah Webster and his family, who named it after their home state of Vermont. The Websters were one of the first families to settle in what is now Wood River. They built a small wooden mill on the river and started trading goods with other towns along the Illinois River. In 1838, they moved their mill to what is now the downtown district of Wood River. TheWebster family kept a busy business going until they died in 1893. Their son-in-law, George Hennepin, continued running the business until he died in 1951. After Mr. Hennepin's death, his widow became manager and ran the mill until her death in 1970. Today, much of downtown Wood River is dedicated to memory of Mrs. Hennepin and her husband—including a statue of them at the old mill building. Marine gifts have been a part of WoodRiver history for many years! One example is Captain Noah Webster's gift to town from Burlington, VT which included 12 muskets and 2 pistols! Another maritime gift from this era was Capt John Ayer's donation of an engine called "Nemo" to help with local trade on the river! This engine would later be used as a vessel by our current owner (Wood River Yacht Club)

Wood River is a small village in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,075 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The settlement began as a log cabin on the banks of the Mississippi River in 1837 by Alexander Dickerson and his family. In 1850, John Fenton built a gristmill on the riverbank. By 1865, there were four schools and one store in town. A post office was established in 1870, and a railroad station was built in 1875. In 1892, postmaster David Ladd opened a general store that became well known for its wide variety of groceries and other products unavailable elsewhere in the county. A grain elevator was built adjacent to the store around 1903; it continued to be used until 1971 when it was replaced by an automated storage facility. In 1907, settlers from nearby Northfield founded Wood River Township; it included present-day Wood River Village within its boundaries. In 1916, Wood River had one school and two stores; however, due to World War I shortages of food materials, both schools closed within six months of each other. The first church building was completed around 1919; it remains standing today as a museum about local history and culture. The population reached 1,000 by 1990; however steady growth stopped after 2000 because of economic woes associated with suburbanization throughout McHenry County (particularly in neighboring Cook County). The village has seen increasing development over recent years: development includes new housing developments (most notably Oneida Circle), retail businesses including several large chains (including Sears Roebuck & Co.), as well as an increase in cultural events such as art shows and music festivals which draw people from throughout Illinois and beyond

The name Wood River is associated with the area that it occupies today. The first Europeans to visit this part of Illinois were the French in the early 17th century. They made a landing on the banks of the river, which they named after a wood near their settlement of Québec City, Canada. The first permanent settler in what is now Wood River was Nicholas Lyon, who arrived in 1797. He built a log cabin on the riverbanks and named it Lyon's Ferry. In 1812, John Stephenson founded Green Bay Station on the opposite bank of the river from Lyon's Ferry. Stephenson cultivated maize and beans for his passengers across the river and marketed them along with goods brought back by traders from Chicago. In 1827, Isaac Stevens transported coal downriver from Minnesota through Illinois to Green Bay Station. This event helped spur development along what is now Milwaukee Avenue in WoodRiver Township and led to new businesses being established such as Stevens' Furniture Store and Smith & Wesson Armory. By 1830, about 12 miles (19 km) of rail had been laid out within present-day Wood River Township, making it one of America's earliest railroad towns.
The Wood River was a stream in Illinois. It was named for the woods on its banks. The first white person to live on the bank of the Wood River was John White in 1800.
