The Arms and Armour shop in Wood River, Illinois is a family-owned and operated business that specializes in firearms sales and repairs. The shop has been selling guns for over 57 years. During the 1960s, the shop founded a program called "Gun Gifting" which became an annual tradition at the shop. The program allowed customers to donate unwanted firearms to other gun enthusiasts in need. In 2007, the store celebrated its 65th birthday by hosting a gala event in honor of their predecessors – Gun Gifting’s founders, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Cook – who had started the store on July 3rd of that year. At this annual event, guests enjoyed dinner from Chef Dave Foley’s restaurant followed by a variety of exhibits including antique handguns and shotguns from throughout history.

Wood River is a town in Greene County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Quad Cities Metropolitan Area. The name "Wood River" comes from the Sauk word wadoka meaning "a stream that flows through wood." The first settler in what is now Wood River was Levi Stafford in 1837. A post office called Wood River was established in 1841, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1906. At that time, it served as the county seat of Greene County. In 1848, John Crain moved to Wood River from Lebanon, Indiana and founded the first gristmill on the present-day town site. Through his enterprise, Crain helped spur settlers to move into what would become WoodRiver during its early years. By 1860, there were twenty-one businesses operating within the limits of present day Wood River. In 1865–1868 two new churches were built – First Methodist Church and Second Presbyterian Church – both of which remain standing today as institutional buildings within their respective communities. In 1870–1871 three more businesses opened: J H Bemis’ grocery store (now known as Grist Mill), George Andresen’s tailor shop (now known as Andresen’s Store), and Wm Dickey’s grocery store (later known as Dickey’s). Although Griney County had been formed on March 3, 1800 by a merger of Greene and Macon counties,[4] no permanent settlement took place within its borders until late February 1837 when Levi Stafford arrived with his family from Lebanon Townshipwest of Chicago.[5][6] On February 15th 1830 he erected a log cabin near modern day Carbondale on land leased from Abram Strode[7] for $5 per year plus interest at 10%. With initial success farming this section of central Illinois was difficult due to wet weather which limited crop yields; but with corn being raised by hand or milling on an Indian eradicated wild corn variety they did well enough.[8][9] After some additions including a blacksmith shop,[10][11] by 1840 he had purchased 8 acres adjoining modern day Carbondale for $60 per acre ($2 per foot) making him one of the largest landowners in Central Illinois wide area - much larger than any other individual at this time[12]. With these advances along with increasing trade opportunities emanating out of St Louis Mo., Levi began importing goods such as flour and bacon which increased profits greatly; prices for these items became cheaper then domestically available alternatives causing competition among local farmers to drop significantly[13]. As Dexter Avenue crossing over Clear Creek just south Of town center today has shown; many people actively worked hard establishing & expanding small business back then even if its not visible today due mainly to economic conditions since those days although still very important parts of local economy like Masonic Lodge #1 & #2 are still standing side by side(closed now since 2006)
The first permanent settler in the area was James Hull, who arrived in 1824. The first town was called Hull, but it became Wood River when a post office was established there in 1830. The population of Wood River increased during the early years of the railroad boom and by 1848 it had reached 100 residents. The town declined during the 1840s and 1850s as new settlers came to the area and trade with Illinois decreased. In 1861, Wood River became one of three towns in Sangamon County when it was separated from Burlington Township. In 1868, a school system was organized at Wood River and by 1870 all grades were taught there. A hotel replaced the old store on Main Street in 1872 and by 1886 it had become a boarding house for girls. In 1898, the last public school opened at Wood River after being built on an adjacent piece of land donated by Captain John Mabee (1827-1912). By 1905, most businesses had closed down due to competition from larger towns in central Illinois. However, some small businesses continued to operate until World War II when large sheets of paper began being produced at nearby Archer Manufacturing Company which forced many small businesses out of business.
