The village grew rapidly after it was surveyed in 1871 by John Wesley Smith and platted in 1872. In 1881, Wood Dale became part of Chicago; however, its growth continued until it had a population of 9,449 in 1990. One of Wood Dale's most famous residents was Mayor Richard J. Wood Dale was founded in 1868 by John B. Wood and his family. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s, thanks to its location on a major Native American trail. The town became an important center of industry and commerce, and soon had a population of over 1,000 people. Wood Dale's prosperity continued into the 1920s, thanks to its natural resources and strong economy. In the 1930s, however, World War II led to rationing of food and housing in the United States, which caused Wood Dale's population to drop precipitously. By the end of the 1940s, only a few hundred people remained in Wood Dale. Despite this decline, Wood Dale continued to thrive through the decade into the 1950s as itbo Hubbard created one of Illinois' largest agricultural companies.
