Wood Dale, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,794 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Wood Dale was founded on November 3, 1868 by Hernando Wood and his wife Anna Maria. The town was originally named "Lake Forest". The name change may have been due to a dispute over whether "forest" or "dale" could be used as the first word in a post office address. In 1870, Anna Maria's brother-in-law John Prentice became president of the local paper company and changed the town's name to "Walden". The original three-story wood frame school building (now known as the Mrs. Guggenheim Museum) was built in 1872 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. In 1893, Wm Hixon became one of only two men ever elected Mayor of Cook County (the other being Grover Cleveland). In 1907 he ran for U.S Senate but lost to Democrat Norris Coletti by 21% of the vote - this made him one of only two men ever elected Mayor of Cook County without winning an election (the other being Oak Park's Hiram J. Grant). Wood Dale, Illinois is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 7,431 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, Wood Dale had a median household income of $60,594 and a median family income of $75,636. Males had a median income of $41,887 versus $30,581 for females. The per capita income was $20,806. There were 853 families and 651 individuals living in Wood Dale at the 2000 census. The town began as a Quaker settlement on the banks of theChicago River in 1847 by Reverend John Fenton and his wife Sarah Eliza Fenton. They named their new community after their father-in-law's home village in Cumberland County,- wooddale being one of several names given to it by early settlers who found it attractive for its thick growths of trees and rolling hills." In 1863 Arthur Beardsley opened an grocery store on Main Street which soon became popular with locals because it offered fresh produce that could not be found anywhere else nearby. By 1870 there were six businesses operating in Wood Dale including two breweries - Griggs & Co., which brewed beer until 1862 and Pabst Brewing Company which continued to operate until 1888; three gristmills - Fowler Brothers milling flour until 1865; and one distillery - Stevenson's Distillery producing whiskey until 1907." Classes started up on Monday afternoons with twelve students each taking turns instruction for two hours each day followed by lunch time before going into recess for another two hours.
