Winnetka is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1853 by De Witt Clinton and John Winnetka. It is the second-largest city in Chicago County after Englewood. The first post office in Winnetka was established on December 12, 1853. The name of the town derives from "winnett" (a small stream), which still courses through the area today. In 1854, John Winnetka donated land to form what would become Winnetka Park; the park has been host to various events throughout history including the Chicago World's Fair (1951–1975). In 1881, James Stillman donated land for a public library; this library is now known as Stillman Library & Museum. In 1886, Jens Jensen donated land for a high school; this school became Cook High School and is now part of Northwestern University's Rothko School of Art and Design. On October 15, 1916, Abraham Lincoln made his inaugural address from Wabash Avenue in Winnetka when he took office as President of America. In 1940, during World War II, American Motors Corporation built its plant in Winnetka; this plant produced V8 gasoline engines which were used by many Allied forces during the war. The plant closed down in 1970 and most of its products were exported to other countries until it reopened under new ownership as GM Racing Products Incorporated in 1986 producing NASCAR cars until it closed again in 2003 due to economic difficulties. On November 5th 2009 two bombs went off near McCormick Place DowntownChicago killing four people and wounding over 200 others including Mayor Daley who had just finished speaking about job creation at McCormick Place shortly before these bombings occurred. On January 7th 2013 three bombs went off near Soldier Field DowntownChicago killing one person and injuring several more people with only bomb remnants remaining after all other devices had failed. After these bombings New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that no arrests have yet been made related to these bombings. In 1865 Isaiah Berlin settled on a tract of land west of present-day Winnetka along Kinnikin Creek* (*Kinnikin Creek forms part of Chicago's borders with Lake Michigan.) Berlin named his estate Arlington Heights after General George Washington’s presidential plantation located on Arlington Island ceded by France to America following their victory over England at Yorktown.* Berlin also purchased 400 acres eastbound on Kedzie Boulevard†† from future Ulysses S Grant* [*Grant later became president Ulysses S Grant moved into White House during Reconstruction.] Uponitus Willard Beall bought 100 acres southbound on Kedzie Boulevard from Berlin for $1 million [*] In 1897 Beverly Randolph arrived from St Louis Missouri with her family settling northeast of Winnie Center then moving west about 1908 close enough to get water out their well* [*Randolph owned farmland eastwest between whitesville Rd & Kinnikin Creek] Randolph developed an industry around processing milk produce local farmers brought advantage such as lower prices while also increasing competition among producers In 1903 architect Daniel Burnham designed an efficient printing press factory * (*This factory would eventually become known as Taylor Brothers Printing Company) that was located south side street across from Harrison Elementary School<**>[this street changed its name back to Harrison Elementary School upon acquisition by winnetka Township]<--begin --> Theodore Roosevelt served as Governor Of Illinois 1912-1920 & 1924-28 <***>[Roosevelt served 2 terms consecutively but resigned prior to inauguration due to health concerns]: He acquired large tracts east/west of downtown Chicagoland starting at Wabash Ave where he built much needed institutional buildings such as Palmer House [now home Of Obama Presidential Library], Hyde Park [now home Of Trump International Hotel], etc."

The first permanent settler in Winnetka was John Sutter who arrived in 1847. In 1870, James Wickersham built the first frame house on what is now Winnetka Boulevard. Winnetka was incorporated as a town on May 8, 1876. The first post office opened in Winnetka on July 1, 1877. In 1902, the Chicago & Northwestern Railway completed its line from Joliet to Quincy and Winnetka became part of that railroad's system. This led to an increase in business for wineries and other agricultural businesses within the town limits of Winnetka. By 1930, wineries had become almost one-third of all business in town and there were over 25 winery businesses employing over 200 workers during that time period alone
