The Winnetka National Guard was organized on December 12, 1903. The unit was initially made up of soldiers from the town of Winnetka. On November 15, 1904, the National Guard detachment in Rockford was placed under the command of the 7th Infantry Regiment. On May 1, 1907, the 8th Infantry Regiment was activated and assigned to duty with the National Guard detachment in Rockford. On October 9, 1907, the regiment was redesignated as the 82nd Infantry Regiment and given a new headquarters and mission at Joliet Arsenal. The regiment served with distinction during World War I and II and is commemorated by two national memorials located in Winnetka - one dedicated to members of Company K who died in battle on April 6, 1918 while fighting for France; and another dedicated to members of Company L who were killed or wounded on December 11, 1944 while fighting against German forces near Rome.

Winnetka, Illinois is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,848 at the 2000 census. The Village of Winnetka was formed on December 15, 1868 from the towns of Winnetka and Armitage. It became an incorporated municipality on February 1, 1906. The first European to explore what is now Winnetka was French explorer Jacques Marquette in 1622-23. He named the area "Winnipeg" after his native land in Canada where he had been exploring for several years before reaching Illinois. In 1811-12 John Jacob Astor founded a fur trading post at present day North Avenue and State Street in what is now Winnetka after purchasing around 8 square miles (21 km2) of land east of Chicago from the Pequot Indian tribe. This establishment served as the nucleus for Astor's expanding commercial enterprise that included purchase of other land and interests throughout Northwestern America during the 19th century. In 1864 Abraham Lincoln visited Winnetka while campaigning for election as president; he spoke to a small group of people gathered around a log fire near present day West Side Highway and Washington Avenue before returning home to Springfield, Missouri that evening. At this time many villagers were living outside the village limits due to difficult wagon road conditions which limited access by foot or horseback to most rural areas within two miles (3 km). In 1907 Emanuel Swedenborg donated $5,000 towards renovation and enlargement of the existing church in honor of his friend and mentor Revd Dr John Addison Cottage who also lived in Winnetka at that time serving as pastor at Our Lady's Church since 1847 with additional services being offered at St Andrew's Chapel across town beginning in 1909 when Reverend Dr James Hutton became pastor thereupon until his death in 1916; both churches are still active today providing services within their respective neighborhoods within Winnetka limits today!
