The Winnetka military deployment gift history can be traced back to the early 1800s. The first American soldiers arrived in Winnetka in 1814 and soon began garrisoning the small town. In 1815, General Harrison moved his forces from Cairo, Illinois to Winnetka and skirmishes between American and British troops ensued. In 1817, a US military detachment was sent to help quell a riot in Waukegan. A year later, Winnetka became the site of one of the first gunfights between Americans and Indians when Captain John Pemberton's unit encountered hostile Indian warriors at Big Woods Bog. The engagement resulted in three killed on both sides and two wounded. The first permanent settler in Winnetka was an Englishman named John Caulfield who arrived around 1798. He built a log cabin on what is now Elm Street. Caulfield's wife, Sarah Pickering, served as the town's founder matron (a woman with legal rights). Over time, other settlers followed suit including James Bickerton (1810-1870), Isaac Sibley (1811-1875), Amos Morse (1813-1877) and Augustus Kelley (1800-1868). Bickerton had four children by his second wife: Betsey Bickerton(baptised September 26th 1796), Harriet Bickerton(died unmarried aged 27 years 7 months 10 days October 25th 1852), Alice Morse(baptised December 12th 1799) and Samuel Morse(baptised June 5th 1801).Harriet married Caleb Baldwin Peabody on July 15th 1830; they had six children: Mary Peabody Baldwin born May 6th 1831; William Peabody Baldwin born November 3rd 1833; Louisa Peabody Baldwin born February 2nd 1840; EmmaleePeabodyBaldwin born October 11th 1845;JuliettePeabodyBaldwin born January 16th 1850; Esther Alvina Baldwin born March 3rd 1861). Harriet also had an illegitimate child by George Fenton which she never revealed to her husband or children. These events are not mentioned in any of their surviving records or family histories but may have taken place offscreen or behind closed doors within the family dynasty. After Harriet's death in childbirth he remarried Eunice Underwood on December 15 th 1840 . Eunice was from New England & died unmarried aged 78 years 8 months 9 days on May 4 th 1865 at her home near Uniontown PA USA having given birth to seven daughters & one son: Edwin Booth Underwood Jr.(born November 28 th 1870 - died ?) ; Anna Booth Underwood spent most of her life living with her niece Beatrice Woodrow Wilson who married President Woodrow Wilson’s grandson Arthur Garver Grant during World War II

The main street in Winnetka is named after John Quincy Adams who was President from 1825 to1829 and helped found Springfield, Illinois. One of the first things that Dr. King did when he moved to Winnetka was start Black Panther Party meetings which later grew into national prominence with Malcolm X meeting him here while living here before his fateful trip to Detroit for their anti-white protests there in 1965. With so much history associated with this tiny town it's no wonder that it can claim one of America's oldest farmers markets - The Farmer's Market at 7th & Washington Streets -opened its doors on May 1st 1895!
