In 1840, a group of Swedes came to Winnetka and started a grocery store. They allowed locals to buy their beans from them instead of selling them through the farmer’s market as had been done before. This new system sparked the start of the Chicago Coffee Company which became one of the largest companies in America at that time. From here on out, coffee became an important part of Chicago society and its economy. Coffee continued to be popular throughout most OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION; however, during THE CIVIL WAR Coffee ceased being an important commodity because supplies were diverted towards munitions production (Brewster). After THE CIVIL WAR ended, Coffee began becoming more popular due mainly to World War II (Watson) when people realized how beneficial it could be for military purposes due to its ability To keep troops healthy while they were fighting (Brewster). Additionally, since 1945 until now there has been an increasing trend towards drip-style brewing which makes pour-overs unnecessary (Goudreau). All these factors have helped make coffee one of IF NOT THE MOST POPULAR COMMODITY IN AMERICA today (Fletcher).

Coffee first reached Winnetka in 1847. The town was founded by Nathaniel W. Davis and his family, who purchased a farm near the village of Winnetka in 1847. In 1854, the first coffee mill was built in Winnetka. The mill continued to operate until 1966. In 1865, George Peabody bought the farm that now includes the towns of Winnetka and Prospect Heights from Nathaniel Davis. Peabody became one of the most significant citizens of Winnetka and he donated land to build what is now the Peabody Museum of American Art on his properties in 1888. In 1896, John Jacob Astor acquired a large parcel of land east of Prospect Heights from George Peabody for $2 million. He had been interested in acquiring property inWinnetka since he had been born there in 1781. After purchasing the land, Astor began construction on what is now called Oneonta Casino which opened in 1903 and remains one of Illinois' leading casino operations today. In 1907, Vincent Cusack opened Chicago's first Italian restaurant, Villa San Giovanni at 12th Street and Michigan Avenue - also known as Ciccante's Pizza Place - which served pizza until it closed its doors in 1984 due to bad health conditions caused by tertiary syphilis contracted while working at Villa San Giovanni.

Winnetka was organized as a village on November 3, 1879, from a small group of farmers and mechanics who had decided to establish themselves near the present-day city of Chicago. The first store was built in 1880 on the site of what is now Winnetka High School. The village began to grow rapidly, and by 1886 it had a library and four churches, as well as a school and post office. In 1888, Winnetka became the seat of Kane County government when it was moved from Palatine toWinnetka. In 1890, Winnetka developed into one of the most thriving neighborhoods in Chicago with many businesses and residences along Lake Michigan until prohibition interrupted this growth in 1920. However by 1933 over 80% of all businesses were either liquor or grocery stores run by Polish Americans who continued to thrive during Prohibition despite efforts by other groups such as the Anti-Saloon League to stop it. After repeal winnetkanians experienced some growing pains but slowly regained their economic stability during World War II before returning to their pre-Prohibition status thereafter With large majorities among both men (78%) and women (86%), Poles continue make up much more than any other ethnic group in Winnetka today - almost half (45%) of its residents are polish nationals according to national census data released last year – making it one of only two Polish villages in Illinois without any affirmative action programs focused exclusively on minorities; however attitudes have softened considerably since then while overall Polish American community size has stagnated or even decreased since 2000 Thanks largely to suburbanization that started around 1950s when families left rural areas for annexed suburbs located just south/west ofChicago – recent waves have been arrivals from Indiana etc., but there’s still about 10% Polish American family living here behind those numbers However recent reports show that many Poles are assimilating faster than they want or need; struggles facing them include housing affordability which has skyrocketed following gentrification rates for similar communities outside major cities across America where prices for homes have increased 3x with no corresponding increase for jobs or wages
