Winnetka is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan statistical area. Winnetka is east of Chicago on the border of Aurora and Oak Park. The first settlement in what is now Winnetka was made by Captain George Kelso and his family in 1802. In 1809, John Fogg established a post office there under the name "Fogg's Prairie". By 1836, the post office had been renamed "Winnetka". In 1849, Solomon Grundy purchased land east of Winnetka from James Krieger for $2,000. Grundy built a mill on the site which became known as the "Grundy Mill", still standing today. This milling industry led to growth in Winnetka and its surrounding villages until it peaked around 1900 with over 20 mills operating in Winnetka alone. However, during World War I production ceased due to economic reasons and after the war many mills closed down or were sold off to other companies. Today only one remain active - Grundy Land & Timber Company - which operates out of an old gristmill that also served as a cheese factory from 1898-1910. In 1915-16 two brothers named Harry and Julius Weis founded Weis Bros., grocery stores located in nearby Arlington Heights and Glen Ellyn (now part of Evanston), respectively; these stores became some of the most successful grocers in Chicagoland before they both closed their doors in 1984 together). A new shopping center was opened just south of Highway 60 between Ridgway Road and Hoyt Road called The Mall at Ridgway (later Northridge) Shopping Center by developer Dick Clark in 1977; this mall would become one of Chicagoland's largest malls with over three million square feet (290,000 m²) inside its walls by 1990 when it was merged into Sears Holdings Corporation anchored by Kmart/ Sears Butler Inc.; however it would close within two years with Sears going bankrupt soon afterwards followed by JCPenney who vacated it sometime later leaving anchor tenant Macy's behind vacant while other tenants gradually left as well leaving little competition inside mall; since then north side suburbs have taken up much more space within mall providing more services such as restaurants etc outside rather than inside near street level like previous incarnation
