Winnetka, Illinois is a town in Winnetka County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,362 at the 2000 census. The name Winnetka is derived from the Indian word winni-kan meaning "to be near the water." The community was laid out in 1853 by Nathan Yates and others as a result of land grants given to them by the fertile Bluffs area around Peoria. It was named for George Washington Winnetka who had been born in 1795 in that vicinity. The first store in Winnetka opened its doors on November 1, 1853. By 1879, there were six stores and three banks with a total circulation of $1 million. In 1907, four hospitals were established within walking distance of Winnetka; one for mental patients and two for children with tuberculosis. Five years later, an electric streetcar line was built between Winnetska and Rockford to provide transportation for people to work in those nearby cities. A post office called Winnetka was established in 1875, and remained in operation until it closed on October 15th, 1916. In 1925 the town added a second post office which again remain open until they closed on October 15th 1926 In 1933 Winton Elementary School opened which became one of the most popular schools due to its excellent curriculum along with great staff member ratio

Winnetka, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,021 at the 2010 census. Winnetka is located on the south side of Chicago. The first settler in Winnetka was John Fetterman who arrived in 1814. He built a cabin on the east side of present-day Winnetka Road. In 1836, Jonas Salk founded the Salk Institute and began to develop his polio vaccine here. In 1870, Charles Wigglesworth bought land northeast of Winnetka and laid out what is now Winnetka Park. In 1871, he named it after his brother-in-law's family home in England - Wigglesworth Place. In 1892, voters approved a school district which included Winnetka Township and incorporated as a city with its own mayor and council members. By 1915, the population had grown to over 20,000 residents and by 1930 it reached 30,000 residents with its own police department and fire department. During World War II (1939–1945), many businesses closed due to rationing but overall business growth resumed within a few years when food production increased for war needs; however most manufacturing stopped during the war because of peacetime restrictions on resources caused by World War 2 trade embargo regulations
