The history of Coast Guard gift history in Winnetka, Illinois goes back to 1879. The first Coast Guard detachment in the town was organized on December 7th that year with thirteen men under the command of Captain John S. Hickey. The detachment patrolled the waters off Winnetka Heights and along the Fox River. In 1881, a second detachment was established and captain William Caulfield became its first commander. At this time, Coast Guard detachments were also responsible for conducting special patrols along the Illinois-Michigan Canal which connected Lake Michigan and Lake Erie. Throughout these years, Coast Guard gifts were often given to local dignitaries as show of appreciation for their help in protecting our coastline and water resources. In 1923, a new station was built at Winnetka Heights which served as the temporary home of the 1st lighthouse brigade until a new lighthouse could be constructed at Quincy Point in 1927. From then on, it would be exclusively the responsibility of the 4th lighthouse brigade to operate both lighthouses in Winnetka Heights. This gave rise to some interesting coast guard related events over these years including several occasions when lighthouses were transferred between brigades without notice or an explanation being given to either party involved! Winnetka, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 59,829 as of the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Chicago and the eighteenth most populous municipality in Illinois. Winnetka was established on May 3, 1836 by Nathan Winnetka and his brothers Isaac and Amos. The original town site lay on one of the largest tracts of land ever SOLD in Cook County - 418 acres (160 hectares). In 1841–1842, Nathan's three young daughters were born here: Sarah Jane (November 15, 1841), Emma (May 7, 1843), and Hortense (December 2, 1845). The original brick building that now houses the Chicago Historical Society was built in 1850 as a schoolhouse for 12 students. The first post office opened in Winnetka on October 14th, 1850; it became known as “Nathan’s Stop” because it served as the terminus for mail from all over Cook County to Mr. Nathan Winnetka. In 1861–1862 an addition to the old schoolhouse was made that contained a large hall or room which served as a court-room during criminal prosecutions before justiceenholder Samuel J. Butler. Winnetka, Ill., is a small town located in the northwestern part of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 27,636 at the 2010 census. Winnetka was founded in 1847 by Elijah Winnet and his family. In 1867, the town was incorporated and named for General John A. Richardson. The first post office in Winnetka opened on December 12, 1847. The town saw its first crop of crops in 1850 and soon became known as one of the leading agricultural centers in Illinois due to its rich soils and well-developed infrastructure. By 1860, there were over 100 businesses operating within the limits of Winnetka. In 1865, General John A. Richardson commissioned architect Jens Jensen to design a new courthouse which would be used by both the village and the surrounding rural area. The Richardsons also donated land for a public square which became known as Richardson Park today. In 1870, local farmers formed a cooperative to purchase irrigation systems from George Meek & Sons Ltd., which helped make Winnetka one of the most agriculturally based communities in Illinois during this time period - Thanks to these systems and other investments made by Richardson’s administration, Winnetka grew rapidly into an important center for business and culture during his time as governor of Illinois (1875-79). A major fire destroyed much of what remained of downtown Winnetka on February 3rd 1898; however, it did not stop the growth or progress that had been made since 1800 when Elijah Wintney settled here with his family on a tract adjacent to present day Main Street/Route 66 intersection In 1902-1903/1904/1905 real estate developer Edward Hutton built homes on School Road across from City Hall - These homes are now part of Brown University's Campus Center property line
