It lies on the Northwest Side of Chicago. The first Europeans to visit what is now Wilmette were French explorers and traders led by Jacques Marquette in 1698. The village was founded in 1837 by John Duryea as a small trading post on the north side of Chicago River. In 1847, Wilmette became an incorporated town when it amalgamated with other settlements along the northwest side of Chicago. At that time there were just over 100 residents and two hotels; one was built by George Washington Carver and another by his brother-in-law Daniel Webster. The growth ofChicago had consequences for Wilmette: By 1870, its population had reached 2,500 people and it consisted only of four stores and one hotel; however, it had become an important center for transportation and commerce on the northwest side because of its location near the river basin and railroads dating back to 1853. In 1925, Clarence Darrow delivered a speech at Northwestern University's Law School urging Americans to take account of international law in their deliberations about world peace or war because "the decisions we make here today will determine our future". Inspired by this address, President Franklin D Roosevelt called for a plan known as "New Deal" which aimed to improve public education while creating jobs through legislation like Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). This effort helped spur economic development in downtown Chicago during World War II while also bringing attention to issues like labor abuses within industry and abroad. With that said , let me share with you my home town’s story beginning with my great great grandfather who moved here from rural Ohio nearly seventy years ago Wilmette started out small: Just three men lived there together on Dearborn Street when they decided they wanted more than just a simple trading post - they wanted something bigger They named their settlement after themselves – “Wilmette Village” They soon realized that they didn't need any more help from anyone else so they set about building themselves some infrastructure including a schoolhouse, store room and even their own water system – all done without government assistance! In fact , most buildings still stand today thanks in part to volunteerism (& donations) from citizens & locals alike !! From this humble beginningWilmetTE quickly evolved into one of America's most vibrant communities ! On July 1st1837 , Mayor Amos Atherton designated WilmetTE as the terminus points along Prairie du Chien Road connecting Rockford Heights eastward thru Cicero IL then south thru Wheaton IL then west thru Bloomington IN until arriving at Decatur IL…thus becoming incorporated into City Limits Of Chi

The last business closed its doors in 1984 after more than 50 years of operation. Wilmette has experienced many changes over its history; some are more significant than others but all have shaped how it feels today as one of Chicagos oldest communities. One change that has had the most impact is the growth of DowntownChicago which has resulted in increased traffic congestion and less access to public transportation which has hurtugenicity overall crime rates
