The town was named for George Washington Carrol who had died in 1835. The first post office opened in Wheeling on October 8, 1836. The first store in town was built by Wm Hickey and operated until 1840. In 1847 the bank building was erected and served as the town's first courthouse until it burned down in 1865. A new courthouse was built and served as the town's main courthouse until it also burned down in 1865. In 1870s two railroads were extended through Wheeling and it became an important railroad center with several large mills being built there including those of J & M Gorman which produced flour for local markets as well as exporting to other countries; Griggs Grain Company which manufactured lumber; and Belcher & Green Machine Works which manufactured grinding equipment for corn meal production. In 1907 Wheeling annexed neighboring Carbondale so that Carbondale had its own city hall but this failed to materialize into anything more than a ghost town because Carbondale couldn't keep up with the growth of Wheeling either physically or financially. In 1950 however when Interstate 94 was constructed through southern Illinois connecting Chicago with Detroit via Indiana you could see all over suburban Cook County signs advertising "The Unseen City - wheling". As word spread about this amazing discovery people from all over started moving into Wheeling not just because they liked living close to big cities but also because there were no job prospects available outside of Chicago so any move meant starting over again from scratch!Wheeling quickly became known as "The Unseen City" due to its lack of visible industry save for a few small businesses catering to a very select few residents while mosteveryone else lived within walking distance of either their houses or work places! Wheeling was first settled by the Potawatomi in 1815. It was bought by the Illinois Company in 1832 and became a part of the Illinois Territory. The town was named for Brigadier General George Washington Wheeling, who had fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill. In 1848, it became an incorporated city and was renamed for Abraham Lincoln. The city is located on the east bank of the West River, about 20 miles west of Chicago. Wheeling has been a major transportation hub for much of its history. It served as a station on the Underground Railroad and as a stop on stagecoaches traveling between Chicago and other points in Illinois. In 1907, Wheeling became home to one of America's first motor racing tracks, which hosted races such as the Indianapolis 500 and World Championship Car Races.
