In 1865, the area around the coal mine closed due to lack of resources and Wheeling's economy shifted to manufacturing. In 1903, the first electric power plant in Illinois was built in Wheeling and it became an important player in the city's economy. The plant made use ofsteam turbines to produce electricity which helped to drive industry and commerce throughout the city. In 1936, when World War II began, industrial production soared as war materials came into demand and factories across America geared up for war effort. After World War II ended, Wheeling experienced a period of rapid growth as businesses reopened and new industries sprung up such as nursing homes and software companies. Today, Wheeling is an important economic center within Illinois with a thriving downtown district that features several high-end shops and restaurants
Wheeling was founded in 1809 by Peter Wheeling and his wife, Nancy. The original settlement was on the banks of the White River. In 1838, the town was renamed Wheeling after General George Washington's first term as President of the United States. The city became a railroad center after being created from part of West Virginia in 1862.
