Wheeling is a city in western Illinois, United States. The population was 51,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McLean County. Wheeling was founded by John Nicholson on November 3, 1834 as a small trading post named "Nicholson's Landing". In 1835, it became the capital of Illinois Territory. The first settler in what is now Wheeling was John Nicholson and his family who arrived from Connecticut on October 30, 1834. He named the town after himself and his two brothers-in-law: George Ralston and Willis Hurd. A year later, Nicholson donated land to the City of Wheeling for $2,000. This helped lay foundation for what would become one of Illinois' most vibrant cities over time. Wheeling, Illinois is located in the heart of Illinois, just east of the city of Chicago. The town was founded by General John C. Fremont in 1836 as a part of his attempt to create a wagon road between Illinois and Missouri. The first community in what would become Wheeling was built on the site of what is now the Civic Center Complex. The town quickly grew into a thriving trading center for goods coming from the Midwest and East Coast. In 1839, Wheeling became the capital of Indiana Territory, and it remained so until 1861 when Indianapolis took over that role. In 1849, Wheeling became the capital of United States territory comprising parts of Ohio and Indiana. It served as such until it was replaced by Washington D.C. in 1870. Wheeling's many accomplishments include being one of the most important economic nodes in central Illinois for more than half a century; becoming home to one of America's largest steel mills during World War II; being host to several national fairs including both an American Fair (1892) and a Europe’s Fair (1934); hosting numerous political events during its history; and serving as an important cultural center for much of central Illinois since its inception.
