The United States Air Force has a rich history that began with the establishment of an air force on July 15, 1947. The USAF was created as part of the National Security Act of 1947 and it was charged with the responsibility of providing aerial cover for national security and defense. The first commander of the USAF was General Curtis LeMay, who led it from its inception until his retirement in 1991. The USAF has more than 1,000 aircraft and helicopters operating worldwide, including more than 150 Boeing 727-200 jetliners and Douglas DC-9s. It is also one of just a few countries in the world to have nuclear weapons. The USAF is responsible for airlift missions such as refueling fighter jets during combat operations or delivering supplies to army units on land or at sea. Additionally, it provides intelligence and reconnaissance support to military commanders around the world. Since its creation, the USAF has been involved in many controversial decisions that have influenced how we view our role as a global superpower today. The Wheeling Aeronautical and Space Museum is one of the oldest museums in Illinois. It was founded in 1901 by George F. Armstrong, who donated a hangar and some equipment to the city of Wheeling. The museum has been housed at various locations since then, including the former Municipal Airport. In 1978, it moved to its current location on State Street in Wheeling after being denied a site at the Masonic Temple.
Wheeling, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Kane County. The population was 97,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Wheeling were French traders who camped near present-day Carbondale on the neck of land that forms today's Erie Canal. On July 4, 1814, General James K. Polk awarded land to five men for their efforts in developing this new town: John Pemberton, Isaac Niles, George Stephenson, and Nicholas Nickles. The first store opened in 1816 and by 1830 there were over 20 businesses operating in the town center alone! In 1837 a group of Englishmen organized as the Northern Pacific Railroad came through Wheeling on their way from Omaha to Portland Oregon; they named their new town after President Andrew Jackson's family home (the White House). After several years of growth due to passenger rail service and manufacturing opportunities brought about by cheap natural gas supplies discovered offshore via an early Pennsylvania oil well (the Carboniferous Oil Field), Wheeling reached its peak population during World War II with almost 100% production from munitions plants! However, since then there has been steady decline until today's modest population of 97,853

In 1941, the United StatesArmy asked Boeing Aircraft Company to create a bomber that could fly long distances and drop supplies over enemy territory. The resulting Boeing Bomber was known as the P-47 Thunderbolt. In 1946, the United States Navy began purchasing Boeing Bombers for its aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN-65). These bombers were used for support of surface warfare and fisheries operations in the Pacific Ocean. In 1955, Lockheed Aircraft Corporation created the F-104 Starfighter for use by the USAF. This fighter was designed to intercept Soviet Air Force flights over America during the Cold War. In 1990, General Electric Company donated an American 707 passenger jetliner to the USAF as part of a donation program which allowed USAF military members and their families to purchase tickets on GE airlines jets for travel between US bases and Europe. This event is often called “The Day That Air Force Gifts Became mainstream” because this was one of the first times that air forces around the world came together to celebrate gifts from different branches of service. Wheeling was born on November 1, 1809, in the town of Wabash, Illinois. The town was named after the Wheeling Iron and Coal Company, which had founded it in 1825. The company mined coal at a nearby location and exported it to New York City. wheeling became a major city in 1838 when the city of Chicago annexed it. In 1861, as part of the Union victory at Gettysburg, Wheeling became the capital of West Virginia. In 1972, Wheeling was designated as a world heritage site by UNESCO. It is home to one of America's oldest continuously operating breweries and has been called "the cultural heartland of America."
Wheeling, Illinois was founded in 1836 by Solomon Allison and James Wright. The town was named after the Wheeling River which flows through it. The first settler in Wheeling was John Wills who owned a small farm near the river. In 1839, Solomon Allison constructed the first sawmill in Wheeling. Over time, other businesses were built including a flour mill, grist mill, and a hotel. In 1875, the railroad arrived to help spread commerce throughout the community. The town grew rapidly and by 1902 had over 20 businesses operating. Despite this growth, economic problems plagued Wheeling until World War I when it received government aid to support its war effort. After the war ended, local businesses struggled to survive as manufacturing left for new countries or went out of business altogether. However, with investments from new investors and an influx of people into the community during the late 1920s and 1930s, Wheeling began to rebound as a thriving city once again
