Wheaton, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,321 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Wheaton was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. His canoe foundered on the Rock River and he named it after his patron saint, Verrazano. A school was built in 1795 on land donated by John Jacob Astor for the education of Native Americans in this area. In 1834, Wheaton became a municipality with a government authorized by Illinois General Assembly Act No. 1 of that year; it had no resident legislature until 1851 when members were elected from wards based on property values and tax rates increased as enrollment grew. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln visited Wheaton while campaigning for election as President of the United States and spoke at one of its meetings; later that year he traveled to Wheaton to campaign for Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War there also gave an address at one of its meetings which helped prepare residents for joining Union forces against Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee during that conflict. In 1870, following annexation by Chicago of neighboring Evanston Township (to the south), Wheaton became part of Chicago's new city limits and lost some properties but regained most during ensuing decades due to growth withinChicago itself as well as annexation by other municipalities including Oak Park/River Forest (1902) and Humboldt Park (1910). On November 3rd 1916 Mayor Charles Bendix organized segregated public schools into "white" areas adjacent to " Negro" areas within City limits on North Side Streets between Kedzie Avenue and West Irving Place - each group being assigned an individual "headmaster." This system continued until integration came about through court order in 1949 followed by desegregation throughout all public schools operated outside white neighborhoods beginning with those inside white neighborhoods starting in 1955 when black students first enrolling began generally composite classes with whites
