Wheaton, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 31,868 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous of the seven towns in Cook County and the second most populous municipality in Chicago after Downtown Chicago. The name "Wheaton" comes from "haldi" or "whalebone," one of many words meaning "peaceful." The first settler in what is now Wheaton was George Washington Carver who arrived on a boat from Portsmouth, England on November 25, 1839. He and his family were among about 150 people who disembarked from the ship Jervis Bay on December 10th of that year and set out for what would become Wheaton.Mr. Carver found land that he donated to the township in 1860. In 1871 Captain John Dutton took over as Township Manager and made Wheaton an incorporated village with a Board of Trustees responsible for its own affairs outside of township control. In 1893 Major General George Armstrong Custer's regiment fought at Wounded Knee during the American Civil War while stationed at Fort Sheridan here; it was here that Custer's horse died after being hit by friendly fire while grazing near present-day North Avenue and Westcott Road. A small cemetery still exists adjacent to Fort Sheridan today which contains the remains of Union soldiers killed during the battle including 2 enlisted men (and their horses) Captured Sergeant William Hite and Private Augustus Herndon On October 17th 1903 Mayor John McGrath dedicated a new public school building located at 780 N State Street which replaced an earlier school building which had been destroyed by fire also on October 17th 1903 The new school building became home to Wheaton High School until it closed down in 2002 due tosted problems Wheaton Village Improvement District purchased property between North Avenue and Westcott Road from Armour Meat Packers Incorporated for use as their corporate headquarters until they moved out in 2006 . The site has since been redeveloped into light industrial uses with some residences on one side and commercial businesses on the other side

Wheaton is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 20,594 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County. The name "Wheaton" comes from the word "whetstone," which was used to sharpen swords and axes. The first European to visit the area was Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette in 1812, and he named it after his hometown of Whetstone in Scotland. The town began as a small community on the edge of present-day Wheaton Heights and Pioneer Valley on the north side of Chicago, about two miles west of what is now Midway Airport. In 1835, construction started on a log road that would connectChicago with Joliet to the south (later Interstate 90). The new road became known as "Wheaton Road." A few years later, when land developers bought some of what is now Wheaton Heights from Native Americans for $5 per acre ($108 per kilometer), they decided to name their new community after Marquette's birthplace – Whetstone in Scotland. By 1840, Wheaton had about 100 residents and was growing rapidly; it had its own school district and post office. By 1851, there were more than 300 people living in Wheaton; by 1860, it had 1,500 residents and became an incorporated municipality with its own mayor and council members. Growth slowed during World War II because most manufacturing stopped production in Illinois due to wartime restrictions; however, Wheaton did experience a brief period of prosperity beginning in 1955 when newly annexed Evanston developed along I-90 near downtown Wheaton. However this prosperity ended within three years when many businesses closed or moved away because of high taxes then being levied by Cook County for suburban development spurring rapid growth throughout Cook County outside of cities/towns without similar revenues or infrastructure From 1971 until 1990 all zoning changes were subject to State regulation through Community Development Agencies created under state statute governed by Board Rules rather than written regulations promulgated by local governments
