From 1948-1953, IDAS operated the jets at Wheaton while USAF Central Command possessed bombers at Seymour Johnson Field in North Carolina. In 1957, IDAS gifted two McDonnell Douglas DC-8 cargo planes which were stationed at Davis–Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona for use by USAF Strategic Air Command (SAC). These planes played an important role in NATO'sairlift operations during the Cold War era as they transported supplies and munitions to nuclear weapons sites across Europe. In 1969, IDAS donated four Beechcraft 1900C turboprop airplanes which were used by USAF Security Forces units stationed around the world. These planes acted as command post aircraft for ground forces during wartime deployments and interceptions of enemy aircraft over hostile territory. Wheaton AFB has seen many changes throughout its gifting history including being transferred to Illinois Department of Corrections in 1996, becoming part of Wright State University in 2000, and finally becoming part of Purdue University in 2016 following a merger between Purdue’s engineering schools and Wheaton’s business schools. However, no change is more significant than when AFB gifted its first jet fighter plane – the F-4 Phantom II – to Lockheed Martin Corporation back in 1948! The first European settlers in what is now Wheaton were the Frenchmen de la Salle who settled around 1763 on a parcel of land that today includes much of downtown and most of the north side of city. The site where these men built their cabin, which they named "La Motte", was later developed into Wheaton as a small community with only 9 residents in 1836 when it became part of Chicago Township. In 1847, Wheaton combined with other townships to form Chicago Township (now Cook County). For many years it was one of America's poorest communities, struggling against waves of immigrants and economic decline. But over time, through hard work and determination, Wheaton has made significant strides: its median household income rose from $27,339 in 2000 to $87,924 in 2008; its percentage of homeownership has increased from 32% to 54%. Today Wheaton remains one of Chicagoland's most diverse communities with people from all walks of life living and working here together. The first churches established in what is now Wheaton were Congregationalist and Baptist denominations. The first school opened in 1836 as an academy for poor children under 12 years old run by Anne Willson-Curtis and her husband John Curtis. When Chicago Township split into two parts—the West Side section went to Aurora Township while the East Side portion went to Skokie—the school moved from its original location on the west side into Skokie’s new high school building (now known as North Park Elementary School). At the same time that schools were being built throughoutSkokie Township for students from east sides who did not attend Aurora or West Side High Schools (later Roosevelt High School), classes were also being taught at La Motte Academy by Reverend Jnoachim Cousins who also ran Rock Island Academy near Cicero/ Arlington Heights until he closed it down due to financial difficulties in 1861 after teaching there for more than 25 years In 1867 Rev John Atherton organized a Presbyterian congregation called Christ Church which met at La Motte until 1870 when they moved out because they found persecution within the church leadership due to their political views during Reconstruction era American South
