The Chicago-based United States Air Force deployment history museum, the Wheaton Airport Museum, preserves and promotes air force history in Wheaton, Illinois. The museum is open to the public on Friday and Saturday from 9am to 4pm and closed on Monday. Admission is free for those with an identification card or a military ID. The United States Air Force deployment history museum was founded in 1992 as the United States Air Force History Museum at Wheaton Regional Airport by Lt. Colonel Rick Lantz of the 5th Bomb Wing (later redesignated 362nd Bomb Wing) at Wright-Patterson AFB. The mission of the museum was to promote air force history inWheaton,Illinois through exhibits, education, and community outreach. In 1998, lieutenant colonel Rick Lantz succeeded his father as director of the USAAF History Museum at Wheaton Regional Airport. In that capacity, he spearheaded a renovation project which included adding a new wing structure and engine room to accommodate increased visitation from members of the media and visitors alike. In addition to providing visitor experience enhancements such as interactive displays and an audio tour system, this project also enhanced ground infrastructure such as restrooms and concession stands within the airport property boundaries. However this township never had any buildings constructed as it only housed two or three families while other townships such as Park Ridge annexed much larger Lots which provided building capacity However on September 17th 1960 when Township map number 9-2-1 was revised creating a new Township called Crystal Lake we reincorporated our old Village into our new Township and began construction on our first courthouse ever known to exist in America(and still standing today) . We continue to build this beautiful Courthouse every year to this day making us one of America's fastest growing Towns!

Wheaton was founded in 1823 by Reverend Jesse J. Wheaton and his wife, Lucy. The town was named after the then-current location of North College Street and Ford Road, which is now part of Normal Avenue. Reverend Wheaton served as the first pastor at a local Methodist church. In 1827, the town had its first schoolhouse; however, it burned down in 1829. In 1840, Reverend Wheaton erected the present frame courthouse. The courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1852, but it was rebuilt and renamed in 1893 after Judge John Goudreau (1802-1893). Reverend George Wicker served as the first justice of the peace for Wheaton from 1853 to 1861; he also served as mayor from 1865 to 1870. The post office opened on May 7, 1850, and remained open until it closed on October 1, 1915.
