Westmont is a census-designated place in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. Westmont is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It occupies a small section of the northwest side of Chicago. The town was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1854 as a stop on their way to preach in other parts of Illinois. In 1870, it became an independent village and was renamed Westmont after its location on the west bank of the Chicago River. The post office was established here in 1875 and remained operational until 1969. The first settler here was James Fenton McCoy, who arrived with his family from rural Ohio in 1856. Other early residents included John Hargrave (1867), Phebe Huff (1868), Jno Condon (1869), Amos Brown (1871), and Wm Haggerty (1872). In 1916, Westmont adopted a new municipal charter that granted voting rights to all citizens over 21 years old regardless of race or sex. This change helped spur waves of integration into American society that continued through most of the 20th century. By 1990, however, African Americans made up only 12% of Westmont's population; nonetheless, they continue to make up a significant portion of its elected officials and businesses. On October 25th, 2007 local resident Michael Brown fatally shot then-17 year old Laquan McDonald outside an east Side high school after several altercations between them earlier that day
