The first settler in Westmont was Willard Dunham, who arrived in 1837. A post office called Westmont was established in 1853, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. Westmont is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 696 at the 2010 census. Westmont is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Westmont was John Hargrave, who arrived in 1810. By 1830, there were six families living in the town. A post office was established at Westmont in 1835 and continued to serve until it closed in 1896. In 1894, a schoolhouse and two stores were built on land donated by James Dolan. In 1912, the first high school building was built and served as instruction for local students until it burned down in 1951. The second high school (now known as Elmira High School) was built on new land donated by Edwin Satterfield and served as instruction for local students until it burned down too. In 1955, a water tower was constructed to provide potable water to residents of Westmont and surrounding townships. In 1961, a feeder road from Lake Michigan supplied water to village founders John Shanahan and his wife Peggy; however this system ceased operations because of budget cuts that year. According to the 2010 census, the median household income of residents of Westmont is $60,500 compared with $46,750 for neighboring villages such as Easton or Springdale which have much higher incomes due to their larger populations and more expensive properties. As an agricultural community richly endowed with fertile farmlands that play an important role within McLean County's economy (the county has been ranked among "America's Top 15" counties for job growth since 2000), It should be noted that while these statistics may give some indication about how well-off residents are relative to those elsewhere within Mclean County - especially given disparities often seen across socio-economic strata - they do not necessarily reflect life experience or individual preferences or priorities which might differ materially from those experienced by residents of neighbouring villages or townships.
