It also maintains excellent relationships with nearby universities including Northwestern University, DePaul University, Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), and Chicago State University; these partnerships have helped make Westmont one of Chicagos most highly research-dependent cities. Additionally, Westmont continues to build strong economic ties with neighboring villages – many residents commute into downtown Chicago or other major cities for work or pleasure. Westmont is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Westmont was founded in 1868 by Germans who had moved to that area from Illinois' Upper Peninsula. The first settler was Johann Gottlieb Wirths, who built a log cabin on what is now Uptown Avenue. In 1870, the community became known as "Worthmont". A post office was established there in 1872, and the name was changed to Westmont in 1893. The Griggs family lived in Westmont from its foundation until 1951. They were one of the largest landowners and businessmen in west suburban Kane County during their time. The Griggs familyowned more than 60 businesses including five grocery stores and two gas stations throughout west suburban Kane County. In 1998, John Daley announced his candidacy for Mayor of Chicago and announced he would run for re-election against then-Mayor Richard Mollenkopf Jr.. Daley won re-election but left office after serving two terms due to term limits set forth by state law at the time. On December 15th, 2008 it was announced that Barack Obama would be running for Mayor of Chicago and would seek to succeed Daley should he win reelection as President of the United States However Obama did not pursue seeking election as Mayor of Chicago; instead he ran for Governor of Illinois in November 2012 which he won
Westmont was first settled in 1847 by a group of Ohio farmers. The town was named after the Mount Washington Hotel, which was first built in 1845 on the site of what is now Westmont Elementary School. The hotel served as a stop on the Underground Railroad and housed many refugees from slavery and other oppression. In 1865, Westmont became part of Chicago.
