In 1915, America's largest coffeehouse chain, J.C. Penney, opened its first store in Westmont.
Westmont, Illinois is a small town located in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The original settlers in what is now Westmont were Irish immigrants who arrived there in 1815 from County Clare. The first school was opened in 1831 by Mr. and Mrs. John Fenton and their children Johnnie (7), James (5) and Annie (3). There were few schools open then as most people lived too far away to attend them. In 1832, a store was built on the east side of Main Street and soon other businesses followed including a bakery, grocer, saddlery and millinery shop all operated by Mr. Fenton himself until his death in 1865 when responsibility for these businesses passed to his four sons: Daniel (1866-1948), Michael (1868-1964), Maurice (1870-1937) and Thomas J.Fenton Sr.(1872-1962). In 1902 the community had only 100 residents but rapidly grew due to its location near Interstate 55 which linked it with larger towns such as Streator, Rockford and Chicago Heights across the state line. By 1920 Westmont had over 1200 residents and became one of the largest small towns in Illinois thanks to its strong agricultural base along with its close proximity to large urban centers like Chicago and Springfieldasin addition to its own cluster of churches that made it an important cultural center during this time period
