The United States Coast Guard was founded on May 14, 1790 as the first national guard in the United States. The coast guard has grown to be one of the most powerful and respected organizations in America, responsible for protecting both land and sea from harm. Today, the coast guard operates over 100oy vessels and employs more than 9,000 employees. The Coast Guard has been in Westmont since 1922. They were first stationed at the old US Customs House on the east side of town. In 1942 they moved to their present location on State Street.
Westmont is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,859 at the 2010 census. Westmont is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It began as a small farming village on the east side of Chicago in 1872 and developed into one of the most popular suburbs of Chicago with its large shopping malls and schools. The city is named for two General James Halleck West (1817-1892), who served as U.S. Minister to Spain and Commander-in-Chief during the Mexican War and became famous for his campaigns against Apache Native Americans and Mexicans in that war. Westmont was incorporated as a village in 1872, voting to become an independent city on February 3, 1903. The first mayor was Jens Jensen (1901-1964). At the time it had a population of just 10 people; today it has over 25,000 residents! In addition to its shopping malls and universities, Westmont also has several parks: Mount Greenwood Park located on Chicago's north side; Willowbrook Park located on the south side; Central Park located on Clybourn Avenue between 95th Street and North Michigan Avenue; Kedzie Lake Park located near Kedzie Boulevard and Cicero Avenue; LaVista Hills Park located northeast of LaVista Boulevard near 100th Street; Washington Glen Golf Course off Superior Road east of Interstate 90 just outside Westmont proper boundaries

Today, the Coast Guard does not just give gifts to its own members, but alsotains donations from various organizations and individuals. One of the most famous Coast Guard gift traditions is The Great Giving Campaign. This campaign helps to provide holiday gifts for troops stationed in overseas areas. In addition, the Coast Guardsmen often send birthday or Christmas presents to their friends and family back home. Each year, different Coast Guard units participate in The GreatGiving Campaign and receive donated equipment, supplies and funds. Gift history cannot be limited to just those within the Coast Guard itself; it has also been shared with other organizations that support law enforcement activity on our nation’s coasts including fire departments and state police agencies across America. These groups have received donations in memory of loved ones who have passed away while working on our shores or during special events like Law Enforcement Day or National Police Week

In 1916, the Coast Guard merged with the Navy, and then in 1949, it became a separate service known as the United States Coast Guardsmen.
Westmont was a small town in Whiteside County, Illinois, that is now part of the city of Westmont. The community was founded by Captain James Prentice in 1847 as a Quaker colony on the banks of the Chicago River. It grew rapidly based on its connection to the railroad and other businesses. In 1865, it became a village and in 1892 it became a town. From 1916 to 1934, Westmont was home to the United States Military Academy at West Point. The first settlers in what is now Westmont were Captain James Prentice and his family who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1847. They built an isolated log cabin on the bank of the Chicago River where they lived for six years before moving upstream along the riverbank to establish their farmstead at present-day Westmont. The railroad arrived soon afterCaptain Prentice's settlement and quickly madeWestmont one of its most important stations. Railroads had always been important factors in early settler life because they allowed goods and people to move quickly through those difficult country areas which were still virgin forests at this time. During Captain Prentice's lifetime, many new buildings were erected around his original log cabin including a store, doctor's office, schoolhouse, blacksmith shop and more. In 1865, when White Settlement Company organized land grants within Whiteside County for inhabitants of Chicago Township (later Cook County), Captains James Prentice and John Aiken both received large tracts of land east of current day Cicero Avenue just south of downtown Chicago Heights - this area would become known as "Prentice Corner". This purchase gave rise to much speculation among early settlers about whether or not such valuable real estate could be successfully developed into a larger settlement; however no action followed until November 4th 1865 when George Hanks granted approximately 153 acres adjacent to Dearborn Street between Michigan Avenue northward (now Lake Shore Drive) extending westward from Ivar Plummer House eastward all inclusive - these lands would form what is today known as "Preston Square" located across from McCormick Place arena on Wells Fargo Bank property just east side Of State Street/ street name change effective date unknown... On December 12th 1865 Charles Goodyear purchased shares in White Settlement Company from Captains James Perton & John Aiken thus becoming one with his fellow Associates... This company operated under several name changes before finally settling upon "Westmont Village", Incorporated April 10th 1896." worthywest mont
