Westmont is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,716 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Westmont was platted in 1853 by Major Daniel Webster and his family as an unincorporated community on the east side of West Montrose Avenue. The name was changed to Westmont in 1861 when it became a village. In 1881, Westmont incorporated as a city and obtained city rights from neighboring Maywood. The population rapidly increased during the years following its incorporation and reached 7,000 by 1910. By 1920, however, the population had decrease to 2,500 due to high unemployment rates in much of Cook County during that decade. However, this did not prevent Westmont from becoming one of Illinois' most populous towns after World War II thanks to its wide variety of businesses and professional services available within easy reach for those living within commuting distance of downtown Chicago or other major cities. Despite these challenges over the years – including several rounds of aggressive annexation by neighboring communities – Westmont has continued to grow steadily since becoming an official municipality with city status in 1961 and remains one of Chicagoland's most vibrant municipalities today. Westmont is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. Westmont is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It was first settled by German immigrants in 1853. The community name comes from "Westerndorf," a small village on the frontier between Indiana and Michigan Territory that was named for Friedrich Wilhelm Westerndorff, an early settler who came to this region in 1819. In 1866, Eastman Kodak organized its first cooperative photography studio in Westmont; it remains one of the town's most renowned institutions today. In 1915, Kodak merged with American Graphophone Company to form GEICO Corporation. This company built two large factories in Westmont: one near the intersection of North Ridgeway and South Racine Streets (now site of Illinois State University), and another along Cicero Avenue just south of Main Street. The businesses at these two locations produced a significant amount of local content throughout GEICO's many years as an industry leader; some 7500 employees were employed there at its peak during World War II. One particularly notable product developed at these plants was Bakelite, which became well-known across America thanks to GEICO's marketing efforts behind its creation. However, after Bakelite lost market share to better-quality plastics during the war years, GEICO went into decline before being acquired by RCA Corporation in 1951. At that point, Kodak's legacy within GEICO led to it becoming one of several divisions of that company worldwide as General Electric Company grew larger than any individual division ever had before – dwarfing even brands like Coke and Pepsi among consumer goods products alone! While much has changed over the years since then – including massive renovations taking place at both facilities following their acquisitions by GEICO – few aspects have undergone such drastic transformation as Westmont's identity itself: from a small agricultural outpost situated on a remote corner of central Illinois to one of America's largest electronics manufacturing centers…a dramatic change for what once constituted only an unassuming hamlet nestled amidst rolling farmland just outside Chicago’s city limits!
