Westmont was founded in 1855 by New England farmers and their families who had emigrated from various parts of England. The post office having been established there in 1857, Westmont became an agricultural center with a large market for agricultural products. A sawmill and gristmill were built there in 1865 and 1870 respectively and served as village cores during the early years of the town's growth. In 1887, when all but one block of South Elm Street were destroyed by a fire that burned for days, lumbermen erected a frame schoolhouse on what became known as Elm Street to serve as community center until new buildings could be erected. The first high school in Westmont opened in 1922 when South High School was moved to the site from Easton where it had been located since1896. After World War II, many factories closed down in northeastern Illinois and southwest Indiana so much manufacturing employment disappeared that few people lived within easy commuting distance of any major city; however, some companies did maintain small plants near Westmont including Weisenthal & Sons Paper Manufacturing Company which made letterpress paper products until 1978 and still uses wood-fired ovens to produce them; also nearby was Krogman Leatheriers until 1966 when they bought out their competitor Papeete Mill; Tannery #2 operated on North Park Drive adjacent to Ladybird Lake from about 1924 until it went out of business around 1984 due to overworking animals handling hides tanning them into leather; finally one restaurant operated along with two gas stations before closing its doors for good around 1990 after being fined $1 million by the Illinois State Board of Education because it failed to meet state health regulations set forth by then Governor George Ryan (D).
