The history of guns in Western Springs, Illinois goes back to the 1800s. There were at least two gun stores in the town and they were both used for hunting. One store was known as the "Gunsmith Shop" and it was located on Stephenson Avenue. It was run by a man named John Stephenson and his son, Samuel Stephenson. The other store was known as the "Pawnshop." It was located on Elm Street. It was owned by a man named Hiram Higginson. In 1859, a man named George Wickersham bought the Gunsmith Shop from John Stephenson and he ran it until 1865. In 1865, George Wickersham sold the Pawnshop to Hiram Higginson. From then on, Hiram Higginson ran both stores until 1886 when they merged into one store calledthe "Hiram Higgs Gun Store." From 1886-1908, the store was run by Mr. Clarence Bogue Jr.. From 1908-1918, it was run by Mrs. Clarence Bogue Sr.. After Mrs. Bogue's death in 1918, it continued to be run by her son until 1951 when it became part of the Swenzer Corporation which merged with Dick's Sporting Goods in 1955 and eventually went out of business in 1957.
Western Springs, Illinois is a small town in Hardin County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. Western Springs was founded in 1837 by farmers Edwin and Lydia Springsteen. Western Springs became a community in 1875 when it absorbed the villages of Delaware and Winchester. In 1907, Western Springs incorporated as a village. The name change to its current form in 1951 when all of Hardin County became one municipality. The first post office at Western Springs was established on July 2, 1837, by Edwin Springsteen. The post office served until March 3, 1840 when it opened under the name Delaware Post Office because that is where Western Springs then stood located on Delaware Creek between Holmes Road and Indian Lane). Some early settlers were John Hildebrandt (1814-1892), George Shearer (1798-1868), Phebe Woodruff (1800-1872), Isaac Fenton (1784-1862) and Peter Van Ness (1788-1864). In 1875 the Village of Wilmington merged with Eastern Township which had been organized two years earlier from parts of Hardin Township and Ottawa Township. At about this time there were six separate townships within Hardin County: Erie Township on the east side of the county; Holmes Township on the west side; Delaware Township on both sides of Stroud River; Ottawa Township to the north; and Westville Township to the south One major event that took place during these years was annexation by Champaign County which happened in 1907 as a result of local petitioning for incorporation along with other surrounding communities including Hartford Hills and Mount Prospect Heights in neighboring counties. Today no physical boundaries remain between what once were Vernon Parish on one hand side OF Hardin Parish acrossriver on another whileChampaign County lies adjacent to all but portions ifwestern Springfield proper
