The history of the Army in Western Springs, Illinois goes back to 1847 when General James K. Polk ordered the organization of a volunteer force to suppress Native American resistance to white settlement. The first Missouri Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized on October 20, 1847 at Western Springs, and served until December 31, 1848. The regiment was mustered out on February 8, 1850. In 1861, the United States Civil War began with Confederate forces invading from Missouri. On April 12th, 1861, General Robert E. Lee ordered his army into action near Western Springs after learning that Union troops were withdrawing from Stonington Heights. Union General Ulysses S. Grant immediately attacked Lee’s force and drove them back towards Memphis; however, Lee retreated again and decided to cross the Mississippi River instead. This decision allowed Confederate forces under General John Custer to successfully end the war by crossing over into Kansas without being detected by Union forces or repelled by them in battle (the Battle ofAbstract). After the Civil War ended, many soldiers returned home and West Springfield became an agricultural center with a small military garrison known as “The Defense Department” responsible for defense of the town against possible attack from Native Americans or other insurgents during Reconstruction-era America. In 1918 there were only five soldiers stationed in Western Springs; however this increased when World War I broke out and Kentucky colonel Harry Hoxie was assigned as commander of a battalion of National Guard units at Western Springs Armory on November 15th 1918 through January 1919 which then became an infantry battalion under command Major Charles Buell Post #2165 stationed at Rock Island Armory on March 1st 1919 until it was disbanded due to budgetary cuts within the Guard Bureau following World War II Elected officials who have represented West Springfield since its incorporation as a city include Mayor Norris Weiser (1941-1945), City Clerk Jeanne Gibbs (1946-1963), City Councilman Harry Hoxie (1965-1968), Alderman Irving Pasko (1969-1972) and Mayor William Daley (1973-1977). The current mayor is Richard Motta who took office on January 1st 2018

August 12, 1861 the Illinois National Guard fought in the first battle of the American Civil War at Pea Ridge, Arkansas. The regiment was mustered into service under General Ulysses S. Grant and served through the war. Missouri and Iowa were added to the Union army in 1863 and 1865 respectively. On July 1st, 1889 the 1st Regiment (Stuart) Infantry became an honor battalion of the new 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the 3rd Infantry Division and activated at Camp Douglas outside of Springfield, Illinois with Headquarters Company located at camp headquarters. Western Springs is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,882 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Western Springs were French colonists who arrived in 1795. The town was founded by James Hargrave and others in 1827 as a result of land acquisition from the Peoria and Kankakee Railroad. In 1836, West Springfield became an incorporated village under the name of Western Springs when it split from Western Springs Township. In 1940, Eastern Illinois University moved to Western Springs from Carbondale and began its campus there. In 1957, the Illinois General Assembly created McLean County as an all-county government with equal representation for both townships within it while leavingWesternSpringtownunincorporateduntil1973. According to the 2010 census, Western Springs has a population of 1,882 people living in 553 households out of a total population for McLean County of 6,711 people (99% racial makeup). Hispanic or Latino residents make up 3% of the population; whites are 96% white and 1% African American; Asians make up 2%. No Native Americans live in Western Springs according to2010 U.S Census data.
