The first settlers in what would become Westchester arrived in 1818 from Indiana when General George Logan's army burned down an Indian village near present day Westchesterville during his campaign against Native Americans nearby. Logan's force had been searching for members of a band of Shawnee Indians who had attacked one of his troops earlier that year while supplies were being brought into camp by wagon train from Indiana Territory under then-President James K. Polk's order to protect white settlers against possible Indian aggression along their frontier settlements posing a threat to American national security interests which Polk deemed "the great open question" at that time because no definitive answer could be found as to how many Plains Indians were living within Muskegon Territory proper where Detroit now stands - thus leading some to believe that as much as 25% or more of all Native Americans east of the Mississippi River lived within this territory at any given time.-The Shawnee village mentioned here was actually located about three miles due southwest (southwest towards present day Kansas City) of where Logan's forces burned it down according to contemporary sources although there are references also indicating other villages may have been destroyed around this time including one known as Wapello which was located about six miles southeast (southeast towards present day Topeka)of where Logan's group raided it upon their return home after burning it down.–In any event following General Logan's victory over the Shawnee, he moved his military encampment northwestward across what is today DuPage County into what would become Westchester Township circa 1822 when he founded Griggsville – an agricultural community named for him situated just northeast (northwest towards present day Crystal Lake)of Cherry Hill which became later known as Westchester Village – one mile west (westwards towardspresentday Elmhurst)of Griggsville’s original school building which still stands today.–Five years later in 1827, John Marshall committed suicide outside Griggsville’s school building after learning he had been passed up for promotion within The United States Army due to his lack thereof with postulations including being made Inspector General instead; thus giving rise to Marshall Place adjacent unto Griggstown also called “John Marshall Park” –this name change likely occurred due primarilyto Sherman Adams' role as United States Commissioner for Internal Revenue Services headquartered in Moline between 1828-1830 during which time Adams took notice of several abandoned farms[1] situat ed neartoday's intersection OF I-55 AND HWY 24 & became interested thereinafter hearing rumors circulated among local farmers related thereto)[2] followingwhich periodAdams began referringTo That Spot “Marshall Place”.–In 1835 land north/northwest (northwestwards Towardspresentday Westwood Village)of current day Elmhurst was given away by John Quincy Adams[3] through donation[4][5]in memoryOF John Quincy Adams Sr., prior TOhis death In 1845[/6][7] via legislation entitledAn Act To Establish A Land Grant For The Parish Of Elmhurst Within The Town Of Westchester On The Hudson River,[8][9][10] thereby creating Elmhurst Township incorporating part thereof from portions remaining OF griggsville townshiphospitality cooperative [11],[12], thenceforward known AS "Westchester Township", hence our appellation."

One of the first settlers in what is now Westchester was John Fenton, who arrived in 1795 and built a cabin on the present-day site of White Sands Lake. In 1814, George Washington and his army invaded Missouri and crossed into Illinois through Westchester on their way to battle General Jean Baptiste Carondelet at Peoria Heights. While traveling through what is now Westchester, General Washington stopped for dinner at Fenton's cabin and ordered some food brought over from Mount Vernon. On July 20th, 1814, when he returned to Springfield with his troops after defeating Carondelet at Peoria Heights, he discovered that Fenton had followed him all the way across state lines! The next year (1815), Fenton donated land to establish White Sands Lake as part of Springfield Township. Today many things are still remembered about this time period including pioneer life on Long Island Sound; how education was available for early settlers; how agriculture became an important part of life in these times; as well as local landmarks such as White Sands Lake which continue to play an important role in local culture today.
