WestChicago was founded in 1871 and became a town in 1893. In 1974, it merged with neighboring Park Ridge to form the current city of West Chicago. The first residents of what would become West Chicago were Italian immigrants who had come from Palermo, Italy during the 1870s and 1880s. They built their homes overlooking Crystal Lake and started a small grocery store there in 1879 which soon became an important center for goods brought into the newly created city of Chicago by railroads. In1974, when Park Ridge merged with neighboring Westchester to form the new city of Wheeling-Richmond Heights-Norwood-East Moline Phase II (), East Moline was added as a separate municipality within Wheeling-Richmond Heights (). This change left West Chicago without any municipalities but effectively preserved its independent status up until its incorporation into the City of Chicago on February 15th 1994 ().
