The history of the National Guard in West Chicago, Illinois goes back to 1892. At that time, the town was part of the federal government of Champaign-Urbana. The first National Guard unit in West Chicago was organized on December 6, 1892. It was called the 1st Regiment of Artillery. That regiment served for three years and then disbanded. In 1916, the 2nd Regiment of Infantry was organized in West Chicago. That regiment served for two years before disbanding. In 1924, a 3rd Regiment of Infantry was organized inWestChicago and it served until 1934 when it disbanded as well. In 1938, a 4th Regiment of Infantry was organized inWestChicago and it served until 1942 when it disbanded as well. In 1945, a 5th Regiment of Infantry wasorganized inWestChicago anditserveduntil1948 when itdisbanded aswell. At that time, there were only two National Guard units left inWest Chicago: The 1st and 4th Regiments were both dissolved by 1948 due to lack of manpower; however, their replacements were mobilized into other military forces during that year so these units still remain operational today (the 5th is currently inactive).

The National Guard has been in West Chicago since the early 1800s. The first units were brought in during the War of 1812, and served until 1827. After the war, the National Guard was increased to a regiment in 1858 and then to a brigade in 1862. In 1871, it was renamed the 1st Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry. From 1861-1875, it served as an infantry brigade under command of General George Custer. In 1865, it became part of the Union army and fought at Gettysburg before being disbanded. The last unit to serve in West Chicago was Company K of the 3rd Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry on October 14th 1898.
West Chicago is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. West Chicago began as a farming community in 1847 on the edge of what is now West Side Highway and Cicero Avenue. The first post office was established in 1849. By 1860, the community had grown to include a sawmill and grist mill, two stores, a blacksmith shop and three churches. In 1871, West Chicago became one of nine towns that were consolidated into the village of Westchester. The boom times for West Chicago came after American Railroads arrived in Illinois in 1870 with their line from Milwaukee to Decatur Junction. With more cars coming through town each day, businesses thrived and people started moving out of rural areas for greener pastures near the railroad tracks. In 1880-81 there was an impressive construction boom when local builders erected over twenty thousand homes; most notably Julius Pritzker's magnificent home called Hoboken on Lake Michigan Boulevard (now part of Millennium Park). In 1898-99 another construction boom started when ships carrying coal from Pennsylvania docks stopped at our wharf on Cicero Avenue for loading onto railcars bound for Scranton or Pittsburgh; this enabled us to build up an extensive waterfrontfront which still today offers beautiful views of Lake Michigan and downtownChicago skyline from every window throughout the year! The 21st century has not been as good for our city though – due primarily to demographics: fewer young people are moving here because they can't find jobs elsewhere while high school graduates are increasingly leaving Westchester because they can't afford to live there anymore (and many others have followed). Despite valiant efforts by Mayor Emanuel’s administration to reverse these trends over recent years – especially through programs like late night bus service and job training grants – it appears that not enough young people will move back into our city until we solve some big issues such as affordable housing availability and workforce development opportunities outside of city limits
The National Guard was a branch of the United States Armed Forces that was created on July 15, 1776. The original purpose of the National Guard was to provide support for the Continental Army in time of peace or war. During the Revolutionary War, many states had their own militias, which were not federally funded and managed like the army. As a result, there was no single national guard unit that could act as a protectorate for all states. On December 20, 1912, President Woodrow Wilson signed into lawthe National Defense Act which created the first peacetime National Guard units in America. The act also provided for federal funding for these units and gave them autonomy from state control. This arrangement lasted until 1917 when Congress passed the Military Service Bill which abolished most of the state militia systems and made all National Guards essentially Federalized Units with only some individual rights retained. In 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 6102 which ordered all State National Guards to be dissolved and merged into newly established Department of Defense formations called "National Guard Armies." This order simplified mobilization procedures and eliminated most state authority over these troops. In 1945, President Harry S Truman issued an executive order calling for all members of military forces who had completed at least one year's service in any part of World War II (or if discharged under honorable conditions) to be re-enlisted as members of organized local defense forces called "National Guard" within six months unless la
