The first coffee bean was roasted in 1875 by a man named John Ritter on the banks of the Des Plaines River. From this point on, coffee production grew rapidly andWest Chicago soon became one of the most important coffee-producing towns in Illinois.
West Chicago, Illinois is a small town in the Midwest. It is located on the shore of Lake Michigan and comprises a few blocks of waterfront along the river and some smaller neighborhoods inland. The population was 8,808 at the 2000 census. The first people to live in what is now West Chicago were Native Americans who inhabited what is now part of downtown Milwaukee. The first white settlers were James Armitage and his family who came from Canada in 1833. They built their home on the site of present day Armitage Park, which became a fashionable spot for families to vacation during summertime. The first businesses in West Chicago were mercantile firms such as J.C. Penney and Sears, Roebuck & Co., which operated from commercial spaces on Third Street between Washington and Niagara Streets from 1834-1838. In 1844, John Coyle founded Coyle's Brewery on First Street between State and Erie Streets; it was one of the early breweries in America. 2nd Ward Alderman John Kapp (D) represented West Chicago until 1865 when he ran for Mayor of Milwaukee instead which he lost to John Haggerty (R). After leaving office, Kapp engaged in real estate development including developing what are now parts of downtownWestChicagoandthenearbyhillslocatedalongtheWisconsinRiverandonLakeMichiganuntilhis death in 1888 3rd Ward Alderman John Fritchey (D) representedWestChicagofrom1887 until1911 when he ran unsuccessfully for Mayor against Abe Lincoln In 1911, city voters elected 3rd Ward Alderman John Fritchey to succeed Alderman Abraham Lincoln as Mayor of West Chicago after he had been term ineligible due to being an incumbent since 1887

West Chicago is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 20,711 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Chicago and home to many of the city's largest companies and businesses. West Chicago has been called "The breadbasket of Chicagoland" for its large percentage of farmers and agricultural products. The first settler in what is now WestChicago was Amos Hixon in 1814. He built a cabin on the south side of what is now Canal Street. A post office was established here in 1826, and by 1830, there were over fifty settlers living here. By 1836, there were over one thousand people living here. In 1847, it became part of the City of Chicago when Cook County was created from part of the former Michigan Territory. In 1870, John Duryea purchased land east of present day Union Avenue for $5 per acre (the equivalent price at that time). He founded the town of Duryea on this land which grew quickly to become one of the most prosperous communities in Chicagoland due to its coal mines and other industrial interests dating back to this time period. The first store opened in 1871 with J C Pease as proprietor/manager Duryea's Coal & Coke Company soon became one of industry's leading players with factories located throughout downtown and outlying areas such as Cicero Heights and West Side Square In 1916, Duryea died suddenly at his home after a long illness; his son continued operations until his death two years later Duryea Boulevard still bears his name today as one block north from First National Bank building leading into DuryEA Coal Yard
The city of Chicago was founded on the West Side of the city by English settlers in 1847. The first white settler in Chicago, Isaac Cook, bought land on the far west side of town from a man named John Taylor in 1849. Cook's settlement became known as "Cook's Landing." In 1857, Illinois General James Shields ordered all white men out ofChicago and into their respective townships. The order led to open violence between whites and Indians. In 1861, when Union forces began invading Kentucky and Tennessee,Chicago residents jeered at them as they marched through their city. By 1865, most of the city had been burned down by Union forces during the siege of Vicksburg. After the war ended, Chicago was rebuilt as a major industrial center with African Americans working in its factories.
